Tech Diving

Take Your Diving to The Next Level

Technical diving is a different kind of diving that allows you to go beyond the limits imposed by diving on a single tank. In Tech diving you carry more gas and are therefore able to go deeper than the recreational diving limit of 40 metres. But you don't do this just for the sake of it. Some people want to explore and be able to go inside shipwrecks. Other like exploring caves. For such extreme adventurers they may even consider diving on sidemount tanks or a Rebreather unit. Unsurprisingly, a number of pioneering marine biologists are technical divers, as it allows them to go beyond the photic zone to collect new fish samples.

Below are just some of the more popular tech courses we have on offer. For more information please contact us or visit the Big Blue Tech site.

Intro to Tech

The TDI Intro to Tech Diving course is the first step towards becoming a technical diver. It's the foundation course that introduces you to the equipment and techniques that technical divers use (having two tanks on your back!), and provides a framework to build from as you progress through subsequent technical diving courses.

However, even if you don't think you want to become a fully qualified technical diver, it's still a really worthwhile course to do, as it will help improve your buoyancy and positioning (trim) when diving on a single tank. Moreover, if you're undertaking your divemaster training, completing the intro to tech course during or after your training will really add to your skillset as a professional diver.

For many people, diving with two tanks (a twinset) on their back makes them suddenly feel like an open water student all over again! But it really doesn't take much time underwater before you start to get the hang of it, and you can then focus on improving your buoyancy and positioning, and getting familiar with the layout of the equipment you are wearing. After that, you can work on the skills you'll need to know to take your training further.

The fundamentals of this course are:

  • Learning how to control and improve your buoyancy.
  • Achieving and maintaining good body positioning
  • Improving your awareness, before, during, and after a dive.
  • Gaining an understanding of how the equipment works, and how to utilise it during your dive.
  • Managing the gas you are carrying to get the most out of your dive.
  • Learning a variety of skills essential to becoming a technical diver.
  • Effective deployment of a DSMB.
  • Ascent procedures.
