Conditions on Koh Tao after the floods

stefan300x225Koh Tao conditions:

As people are still asking what kind of effect the heavy rain at the beginning of january had or still has on Koh Tao here's an update.

Koh Tao is made of rocks and sand. The inner part of the island is rocks and all the buildings are constructed on pillars on the rocks. On the beach area the ground is naturally sand. Because of that all buildings on the beach area are on pillars that go two meters deep into the sand.

When the heavy rain comes a lot of the sand is washed away into the ocean.

This is absolutely normal in every monsoon - some years heavier and some years weaker.

But due to this construction no resorts or other "real" builidings were affected or even "destroyed" as many people think.

A few beach bars were damaged as they are not so strong being constructed of wood. But most of them are already reconstructed, as they are cheap and quick to build.

The sand that was washed away, was already brought back after a few days by the natural high tides and by relocation of some of the sand from the beach.

Now everything on Koh Tao is absolutely back to normal and beautiful as ever.
