The SSI Stress & Rescue Course

If you are thinking of becomming a Dive Pro then you need to take your Open Water your Advanced & then your Rescue before you can enroll in the joyous experience of the Divemaster Course. The Rescue course is probably the most challenging of the non professional certifications but only takes 2 days to complete. It will expand your knowledge and experience beyond the purely recreational level because you’ll learn to look beyond yourself and consider the safety and well being of other divers. Although this course is serious, it is an enjoyable way to build your confidence. And then its time to enroll in your DM Course.

The Beautiful Island of Koh Tao

kt300x225Koh Tao. Also known as Turtle Island which is the direct translation from Thai. So called beacuse as you approach the island from the sea you can see the very distinct outline of a turtle. Helps as well that Koh Tao also has lot of resident turtles here too! Amazing to think that in this 21 square kilometer island there are over 50 Dive centers here. Must be pretty good scuba diving if theres that many centers here wouldn't you reckon.

Awesome Whaleshark Photo being considered for Nat Geo Magazine

lifeaquatic300x225Huge congrats to Dan Charity who went diving with our friends at The Life Aquatic in Samui last week! His fantastic Whale Shark picture made it in today's National Geographic Daily Dozen! The young Whale Shark was swimming in the Gulf of Thailand at a popluar dive site called Sail Rock near the island of Koh Pha Ngan. The brief encounter was was captured whilst diving the remote reef which the graceful giant was using as cleaning station, a sort of car wash for big fish. What makes this such a great shot is that while the whale shark might be moving slow, the school of fish that is surrounding the shark is moving quickly so as an underwater photographer you have to be prepared for this moment. Great work being prepared for this brief encounter.

Fingers crossed that it gets printed in the National Geographic magazine Dan!

Another Whaleshark at White Rock today

dave shark2300x225Thought to have evolved 200 million years ago, one might think that humans would have had ample time to study the species, but its life history remains poorly understood, partially because it is both rare and migratory. Jacques Cousteau is reported to have observed only two whale sharks in his life and it took him 20 years just to encounter his first. He obviously never dived Koh Tao cos we're buming into 1 a day at the moment. Look at this one, taken at White Rock.

Flying with Whalesharks

freediving4300x225In recent years Freediving, also known as Breathhold Diving or Apnea has become the fastest growing water sport in the world. Records are being broken around the globe for longest time underwater, deepest depth reached on one breath & some amazing footage has been recorded of freedivers being approached by some of the biggest & most amzing underwater creatures in the world. Because there is no Darth Vader type noises as there is with Scuba Divers Freedivers get approached out of curiousity by these creatures & underwater photographers are recording some unbeleivable encounters. Well worth a go if you have time to learn. It just takes 2 days & we'll teach you how to hold your breath for longer than 2 minutes & reach depths in excess of 20 meters. The Blue Ringed Octopus

octopus300x225So this is exciting. A marine creature thought to be only residing in the waters around Australia has recently been seen ( alot) here in the muck around Koh Tao. One of the most venomous creatures in the world the Blue Ringed Octopus tho small in size packs a punch that can kill! So no touching, as always. But they are not naturally aggressive so there is no cause for alarm and they are beautiful and very rare so getting a glimpse of these creatures is definitely worth a note in your Divelog!

New Promotion for Mini who will now join our Mentor Team at Big Blue Pro

mini300x225Mini Ant used to be a big shot Architect with many of his fine erections scattered throughout London & was offered a job by one of the UK's largest building firms but turned them down in order to become a Big Blue Diving DMT! Could have been a disastrous decision for Ant but luckily he excelled at his DM Training & went straight on to become an SSI Instructor and was immediately offered a job by another Dive shop on Koh Tao before we told them to bugger off! "He's ours!" Now works as one of our Full Time SSI & PADI Instructor's in our Big Blue Pro Mentor Team Ant is still trying to keep his eye in the architectural game & totally designed our Mothership MV Waverunner.
