The technical diving department at Big Blue- Big Blue Tech, is run by long-term instructor Andy Campbell. The "tech shack" is located within Big Blue in Sairee village. Andy is always around to have a chat with. If you're in Koh Tao, you are more than welcome to pop in and have a chat.

What is technical diving?
Big-Blue-Tech-thailandTechnical diving is a different kind of diving that allows you to go beyond the limits imposed by diving on a single tank. You carry more gas and are therefore able to go deeper than the recreational diving limit of 40 metres. But you don't do this just for the sake of it. Some people want to explore and be able to go inside shipwrecks. Other like exploring caves. Unsurprisingly, a number of pioneering marine biologists are technical divers, as it allows them to go beyond the photic zone to collect new fish samples.

With each technical diving course you undertake, you will learn additional skills that will enable you to progress to the next level. The entry level course is the TDI intro to tech, which introduces you to the equipment configuration and gets you used to diving with two tanks on your back. You'll also learn skills similar to those learned in the open water course.

Even if you don't think technical diving is for you, the intro to tech course is really worth doing, as you will find that your buoyancy control and streamlining in the water will be hugely improved when you dive again on a single tank. It's also a very valuable course for anyone undertaking their divemaster training, as it will make you into a better diver, and a more knowledgable dive professional. Intro to tech will qualify you to dive on two tanks to the maximum depth that you are currently certified to.

Once you have learned the basics, you can progress through the courses below:

Advanced nitrox- Use additional gases as a "side-stage", containing enriched air nitrox up to 100% oxygen. Dive to 40m.
Decompression procedures- Conduct decompression dives using additional gases up to 100% oxygen. Dive to 45m.
Extended range- Dive to 55m on air, and use additional gases to accelerate your decompression stops.
Trimix- Dive to 60m by adding helium into your breathing gas.
Advanced trimix- Dive to 100m using helium breathing mixtures.
Advanced wreck- Allows full penetration into a wreck beyond the light-zone, depending on the gases you are carrying.
Sidemount- Carry two tanks on your side. Fantastic for wreck and cave diving.
