Sawasdee Khrup & Greetings from another beautiful day in the Gulf of Thailand. photo by Tetsu Kusu Welcome to Big Blue Diving Resort, a PADI and SSI Diamond Dealer Instructor Training Facility established in 1991. Over the last 16 years we have grown from a small beachside shop at the end of the pier to one of South East Asia’s leading Dive operators. In fact when the founder decided to build his new Dive Resort at the northern end of Sairee Beach in 1991 the locals thought he was very brave for building that far up the beach and that he’d struggle to make a success of his Dream dive shop. }Now in addition to a very successful dive shop we also have our own restaurant, bar, air-conditioned classrooms, and the largest fleet of dive boats in Koh Tao, making the most amount of daily departures from the beach, right outside our resort. |

May 16th 2008 Islanders were woken this morning by a strange yellowy light streaming through their windows. What was that golden ball of fire rising over the hilltops of Koh Tao? It was all getting a bit too tropical there for a while...
We knew we were in for a spot of rain when P'Piak grew a beard and started bringing the animals of Koh Tao aboard Banzai two by two. What no-one could have predicted was the endless days of steely grey skies, roiling thunderheads looming on the horizon, daily downpours of biblical proportions, driving rain, steamy drizzle, gorillas were spotted swinging through the trees of Koh Tao's mist-wreathed hillsides. Incessant, relentless, interminable rain. All we needed the last few days was Gene Kelly tapdancing through the sodden sand of Sairee, twirling his brolly (thats an umbrella in enger-lish) and looking all chipper. Little orphan Annie kept telling us the sun (would) come out, tomorrow, come what may, tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya, tomorrow your only a day away....ahem. Don't worry, she's safely stashed away in her blue ziplocked bag until the next EFR course.
Do we dive in rain? Hell yeah! Rain or shine we still go out, there's bugger all else to do when its raining anyway, and no matter what goes on up top, its calm and peaceful down below. It can be difficult convincing customers to get back on a boat and go diving when they've just come off the catamaran from the mainland. Big waves means pale green faces and sick bags (why are they transparent ffs?), if you are thinking of coming to Koh Tao, I recommend the little yellow seasick pills before you board. If you can't find any at the pier most of the instructors and divemasters on the boat will usually have a few in their pockets. They're easy to spot, they're the ones drinking Singha while everyone else is filling a plastic bag with their breakfast ;) |

Of course any business aim is to make a profit but how one makes the profit is our aim!
Koh Tao is a relaxed little tropical island paradise. The water is never cooler than 27 degrees and averages throughout the year at around 30 degrees. Water visibility often stretches 20 meters or more and the diversity of our dive sites generates continuous tourist interest throughout the year.
Our resort is situated on the west coast of the island in Sairee Beach, the nicest and largest stretch on Koh Tao. Every day you awaken to the crystal clear azure waters of the Gulf and each night we are greeted with the glowing warmth of a setting sun. There is an atmosphere on Koh Tao like nowhere else in the world. Its easy to arrive here & immediately fall in love with the island. Our Staff realize how lucky they are to live and work here. They love their jobs and look forward to coming to work. They are able to have fun while being strongly committed to all elements of safety. The frequency with which these guys get complimented by our divers is abnormal but these guys do do a great job. All of them, our Boat staff, our Restaurant staff & all our Dive staff. Their enthusiasm is infectious and consequently the atmosphere they generate increases the profitability of the business.
Our aim is to supply you, our holidaymakers and divers, with an enjoyable and safe experience & memories that will last a lifetime. Our business is to make you happy! |

When all is said & done the success or failure of any business relies very much on the involvement of the staff. Big Blue has a fantastic Dive team & we all know that every time we start a course we know this is big deal for you the students & therefore we got to make this experience the highlight of your holiday! So lets see who these clowns are shall we...
Panos Iosifoglou- Our resident Mediterranean German! Originally from Greece, Panos got bored with the lovely sunshine, crystal clear waters & beautiful women on his Mediterranean island & decided to move to the sunshine & crystal clear waters of Germany instead. Having realised how stupid he'd been he immediately came out to Thailand, more specifically Koh Tao, for a holiday & is still here! He has worked his way up from a humble Divemaster at another Dive center & has become one of our talented number here at Big Blue. Panos has great determination & will bend over backwards to ensure you get the best for your dollar! After all he's Greek! Ally List- Our German speaking Austrian skier & snowboarding queen has now been a full time PADI & SSI Instructor at Big Blue for a couple of years. She left the glamour & glitz of Austrian TV to become a Diving professional & will one day soon be a PADI Instructor Trainer. Ally has an amazing ability to get on with everyone, which makes her one of our more popular Instructors all round the resort. She is very considerate of others & extremely enthusiastic when it comes to diving & teaching. In addition Ally is a massive Formula 1 fan & is always very glad when the season ends cos it plays hell with her sleeping hours! Darren Buckland- Has been diving the oceans of the world as a PADI & SSI Instructor for a number of years. He’s a bit of a joker & can relax you like nobody can with his good natured & lighthearted sense of humour. He is the proud owner of Koh Tao's first Spiderman wetsuit & has vowed by next Oktoberfest he will also have his own designer made Lederhosen Wetsuit! Serious when needed though, Darren is our environmental monitor, which means he is responsible for Big Blues environmental awareness & responsibilities- beach & divesite cleanups, report on whaleshark sightings, & environmental support campaigns. He is also a PADI IDC Staff Instructor & hopes to be a Course Director in the not too distant future. Dean Jenkins – Deano, the boy from the valleys, has also been with Big Blue for 2 years now & has proven himself to be one of the most committed Instructors in Koh Tao. A mechanic by trade Deano learnt his diving skills while on holiday, quickly fell in love with it & decided to change his career direction & became a PADI & SSI Dive Instructor. Soon, Deano was working at Big Blue as an Instructor & is now highly involved with our Divemaster training & our equipment maintenance & servicing courses aswell. Deano is another member of our Instructor team that is a PADI Staff Instructor aswell which means he can assisit in the Instructor Training of Divemasters. Anna Berntsson- Anna came to us acouple of years ago to learn how to dive & now, after a stint working in Thailand & another stint working the west coast of Australia she is back & we just couldn't miss the opportunity to employ her. Anna is our Scandanavian Swedish Divemaster workhorse! She is always busy running around getting things ready for everyone & the boats when she is in charge are immaculate. Anna is an excellent divemaster and gets many compliments from customers for her professionalism her knowledge of marine life & stunning true Scandanavian beauty! Guillaume Fargues- more affectionatley nick-named 'G' for short is our French speaking PADI & SSI Instructor who has been at Big Blue now over 2 years. G is a Gaelic gentleman who knows that your diving course with us should be special which is why he’ll ensure that 110% of himself goes into every course. Extremely reliable & a good team player G is never shy of stepping forward to lend a hand. He has recently completed his Instructor Development Staff training and is looking to go the whole way to becomming a Course Director in a few years. He is also a keen rugby fan & DJ & can often be seen spinning the decks at the Big Blue Bar, when he's not on his knees in tears after losing the rugby to England... again! James Thornton Allen- aka ‘Canada’, PADI & SSI Instructor has a love for the deep & the technical. His military training in the Royal Marines has left him with an interest in Nitrox, Deep, Wreck & technical diving. Canada is a Tech Instructor & organises trips to some of the wrecks around Koh Tao on a special trip onboard Koh Tao’s only Liveaboard vessel- M.V. Trident every Wednesday. When he's not busy organising the tech & wreck diving Canada can often be found DJing in our bar on party nights or manically rearranging furniture, flower arrangements, classrooms & dive retail displays around the resort. There's a perfect little housewife underneath that painted Rock DJ/Action man exterior! Ricky McKendry- Every good dive shop needs a good Irishman & Ricky, well ... he's a good crack! He is also a very experienced Divemaster & has been with us at Big Blue for over a year & consequently knows exactly where to find all the good stuff. He is also in charge of our Equipment maintenance & is a certified Equipment Technician, every good dive shop should have one of these aswell! On top of all that Ricky is also a PADI Instructor & we have employed his Irish charms to teach a few courses in the past. He is very organised & highly responsible & takes considerable care to ensure all his divers have had a great day out on his boat. Rick – James ‘Rick’ Rickert- Our resident Hawaiian American is an SSI Instructor & PADI Instructor. Rick is another Instructor with a nicely laid back approach to diving. He has a great sense of awareness & is very quick to help & improve his students skills where & when needed but by doing so without being all hands! Rick spends some months of the year working for our west coast Big Blue branch in Khao Lak & gets to dive the Similan Islands alot. He is also a big fan of travelling the world & likes to pop off for a jolly every now & then! He has a great sense of humour that comes out in his classes & he is the winner on every occasion for best fancy dress costume. Simon Garrity- Worked as a Divemaster at Big Blue before becoming an SSI & PADI Instructor. His loyalty & passion for Liverpool Football Club is rivalled only by his enjoyment & enthusiasm for diving. Recently he has done a season working for our west coast branch of Big Blue Diving in Khao Lak & loves the diversity of fish life between the two sides of Thailand. He is unquestionably the one Instructor that gets the most returning customers & highest amount of compliments. Simon is exactly what you see. He is shy but friendly, funny & serious & is also a very key member of the Big Blue Dive Team. Sonia Scott- Represented England at Rugby League & then became a Sports Physiotherapist by day & a nightclub Bouncer by night before finding her true calling as a Divemaster! Sonia has been working at Big Blue as our head DM for over a year. She is also quite capable of teaching aswell & gets called upon to do some of our PADI Courses when needed. She is very organised & knows exactly what is going on at any moment of the day & will be going to work for a month or two at our west coast office in Khao Lak. She does a fantastic job in Koh Tao of scheduling the boats & the divesites & entertaining the crowds when out at sea, she will definitely do the same in Khao Lak. Celine Descargues- Our PADI Instructor & soon to be SSI Instructor has been working in diving almost 10 years now. Originally from the South of France, ie the nice part of France!, Celine has travelled far and wide in her search for the perfect place to live & dive. Having started in her professional training in Koh Tao she has subsequently worked in the Caribbean, Dubai, Thailand, & Mexico & has found her way back to the joys of Koh Tao. Celine is our English, French, Spanish & Italian Instructor & is another member of our Insructor team with a PADI Staff Instructor rating. Perfectly patient, absurdly attractive, totally trustworthy, extremely entertaining, affectionate, friendly & fabulously French! Adnan Sopi- Another one of our Alpine dive staff hails from the mountainous part of Germany- Switzerland! Which, of course, means he has a Swiss Bank Account with millions of dodgy dollars stashed away. Which would account for the eagles lair hideout he has up in the Koh Tao hills, & how he can afford it on his Divemaster salary. Allegedly he was a nurse before becomming a Diving professional but had to stop cos some patients were reading too much into his name when they were told their Nurse would be soapy! Now a retired nurse & dollar hoarder Sopi is a very key member of our Divemaster team & speaks excellent English & Swissh! Jim Donaldson- SSI & PADI Instructor (retired!). Has worked as the Manager at Big Blue now for almost two years and has been in Koh Tao since the millenium. He has worked at various different Diveshops as a cook! a Divemaster, an Instructor & a Manager & now sits around wasting away his retirement years filling in & keeping updated the Big Blue page on Facebook. He's been poncing around now for quite a while making out like he actually knows what he's doing but just like his rugby team, its all just a show! Speaking of which, Jim is getting married this year to his longterm German babe as a means of getting over his depression from the New Zealand All Blacks failure to win last years Rugby World Cup... again! |
