Big Blue Tech is a 5 Star TDI/SDI Instructor Training Facility, a SSI-TXR Instructor Training Facility, a BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club)Technical Centre / Instructor Training Facility and a PADI TecRec Dive Centre

Technical Diving allows experienced divers to dive deeper, enter overhead environments such as a wreck or caves or dive for longer bottom times with specialized equipment like a rebreather after gaining expert training by certified technical diving instructors.

Big Blue Tech provide expert training with our experienced and qualified in house training team who have been selected to represent Big Blue Tech. The training provided is designed to help create a smooth transition from your current diving level to your future goals.

What is "Technical" Diving?

Technical Diving is a term that is now used to describe an advanced diving discipline that has been practiced for many years, and in many forms.  Cave and Penetration Wreck Diving are two examples.  “Technical Diving”, as a term, was coined by Michael Menduno, and used in his Aquacorps publications.  It has since become a fashionable term for describing the techniques used by advanced divers to carry out profiles that would be considered somewhat extreme by most of the “recreational” diving community.  However, since all of these dives are being performed for the pleasure and recreation of the participants, they are in fact “recreational” in nature as well.

For training purposes and educational clarity, we need to have a point of division between these two distinct disciplines.  Therefore, we define the term Technical Diving to include: any dive that requires a planned decompression stop, or the use of more than two gas mixtures, or dives that exceed 40 m, or  dives involving penetration into either wrecks or caves, or dives using more than two cylinders.

Conversely we can limit recreational diving to dives that are within the 40 m maximum depth limit, within the “No Deco Limit”, using only two cylinders and two gases without any cave or wreck penetration beyond the light zone.

The 40 m depth limit is reasonable for a recreational limit because dives deeper than this will require some element of stage decompression, and if properly executed, definitely more than one breathing gas.  Further, we would include any dives involving penetration into either wrecks or caves, since this activity requires very specialized training and discipline regardless of the depth. This is indeed a broad definition.  When you have completed the our Technical Diver Programs, the skills and knowledge that you will have acquired will bring all of this into clear focus.

You have taken the most important step in the acquisition of safe diving skills by seeking out the proper training.  Our Technical Diving Instructors will guide you in developing the proper attitude and approach to this new diving adventure.  There are many new diving frontiers ahead of you now, and Big Blue Tech will be there to help you meet the challenge.

Big Blue Tech is committed to remaining on the cutting edge of diving education, and pledges to take no shortcuts in providing this training to you.  We will continue to offer programs that extend to all levels of diving, and some of you will progress to our Expedition Programs for Extended-Range, Tri-Mix, and Closed-Circuit Rebreather.  This is only the beginning of a great new diving adventure, and you have begun by making the right choice, the Big Blue Tech choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is technical diving?Technical diving can be defined as diving in overhead environment. This overhead environment can be real, for example diving in an underwater cave or inside of a wreck, or virtual, caused by decompression obligation due to the depth or duration of the dive. In both cases diver does not have direct access to the surface should a problem arise. Specialized equipment and training are absolutely necessary for anyone engaging in this type of diving.

Does the agency matter? You will often hear that your instructor´s personal scuba diving skills and ability to teach are much more important than the agency affiliation and that is true. However, in technical diving agency does play a role too. Training agencies like BSAC, SSI, PADI and TDI, that started and developed training materials and methodologies long before technical diving became mainstream, have proven track record of producing excellent technical divers.

How to choose an instructor? Some of the questions you might want to ask your instructor - how often does he or she dive outside of teaching courses, what kind of diving is your instructor´s primary interest and how much you can benefit from his or her experience. Find out how long they have been an instructor and how many courses they have taught. Email the certification agency directly before you take the course to make sure your instructor is certified to teach that course and has experience as well.

What is my first step into technical diving?Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures provide the foundation of technical diving and all other courses will build on the knowledge and skills learned during these courses. If you don't have required prerequisite training or experience for Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures, start with Nitrox. Intro to Tech course will help you develop correct trim and propulsion techniques as well as understanding of proper buoyancy control and will make your subsequent tecnical diving courses progress significantly easier. Drysuit diving course will open up numerous local diving possibilities and will help you with your future technical diving training when your dives become longer and deeper.

Do I have to go deep for technical diving? No. Although technical diving is commonly thought of as deep, there are a lot of courses that stay within the sport diving limits (40 m / 130 feet) such as Advanced Nitrox, Semi Closed Circuit Rebreather (SCR) and Closed Circuit Rebreather (CCR) and Advanced Wreck to name a few.

Will technical diving allow me to go deeper?Yes. TDI has course curriculums that take you as deep as 100 m / 330 feet and do so in a manner that each course builds on the last and each course takes you a little deeper. By receiving training in this manner not only are your skills and knowledge increasing but so is your comfort level.

Am I more likely to get hurt engaging in technical diving?Technical divers constantly work on refining their skills and technical dives are more structured and better planned than typical open water dives. Even though no amount of training or specialized equipment can eliminate all dangers associated with diving in overhead environment, statistics show that technical diving related accidents happen at about the same rate as accidents among open water instructors and are about four times less frequent than open water diving accidents.

Do I need different equipment for technical diving?Yes. Certain technical diving activities may require additional specialized items, of which you´ll learn during the course of your training.

I don't have any technical equipment of my own, can I rent it for my course? If you are taking a course with us at Tekstreme then all the technical equipment that you require is included in the course price. If you are making Technical dives outside of a course, we have the full range of up to date technical equipment available for hire. (See our price list for full details).

I have been looking at your website at the various courses but I am undecided on which course to take. Which is the best training agency to learn Technical diving through? In all honestly there is no real right or wrong answer to this. Each training agency that we offer, whether it's BSAC,SSI, PADI Tec Rec, or TDI, the courses are taught to the highest standards. What we would recommend is not to be afraid of trying each agency as an experienced Technical diver will take parts of each course from each agency to build their experience up.

I want to take a Technical diving course but I would like the student manuals as soon as possible, how can I get these? That's easy. As soon as you make your booking with us at Big Blue Tech we will send you all the relevant materials that you need so you can start reading at home.

Choose the course your interested by selecting from the list to the right.
