Mid May thru to August – Diving the best dive sites on the east coast of Koh Tao

The morning boat heads to Hin Wong Pinnacle — a stunning east coast pinnacle and a prime location for whale shark encounters — followed by Laem Thien Caves the next day and the HTMS Hanhak Sattru wreck on the following day, all famous for big fish action, schooling barracuda, reef sharks, and pelagic encounters. Second dives include premium sites such as Shark Island, Aow Tanote, and Lighthouse Pinnacle.

Afternoon fun dives (max 4:1, two dives) are perfect for beginners or those easing back in, visiting favourites like Aow Leuk, Lighthouse Bay, Aow Tanote, and Hin Ngam. For Advanced divers, night dives at Hin Wong Bay or Aow Tanote reveal a completely different underwater world. Mid-August to Late November — Chumphon, Southwest & Sail Rock firing on all cylinders.

Every three days we rotate through the region’s finest offshore sites. Sail Rock kicks things off — a towering seamount that consistently delivers the most dramatic pelagic action in the Gulf. Chumphon Pinnacle follows, where massive schools of trevally and barracuda spiral around the pinnacle alongside sharks and open-water species. Southwest Pinnacle rounds out the rotation, a deeper site known for sheer walls, resident reef sharks, and the kind of encounters that make it onto highlight reels. Between main dives, we drop into standout second sites — the atmospheric HTMS Sattakut Wreck, the dramatic topography of Green Rock and Red Rock, the shallow thrills of White Rock, and the twin wrecks of No Name Pinnacle and the Suphairon.

Back on Koh Tao, afternoon two-tank fun dives run at a relaxed 4:1 ratio — ideal for first-timers, rusty divers, or anyone who just wants to cruise. Twins, Japanese Gardens, Mango Bay, and Junkyard Reef are firm crowd favorites. After dark, the same sites transform completely — night dives at Twins and White Rock bring out a whole cast of critters you won’t see in daylight.

December to Mid-January — the Gulf goes quiet, and Koh Tao slows down into something a little more special.

Monsoon season means we keep things close to home, tucking into the shelter of Koh Nang Yuan for morning dives at Twins and White Rock. The conditions are calmer, the groups smaller, and the pace unhurried. But the real revelation happens in the afternoons. Sairee Reef and Tao Tong are among the most underrated dive sites on the island — shallow, silty, and absolutely packed with life if you know where to look. Nudibranchs in every colour, well-camouflaged frogfish, ghostly pipefish, hunting octopus, and rare critters that never show up at the offshore pinnacles. This is slow diving at its best: torch in hand, eyes down, and constantly surprised.

For underwater photographers and macro obsessives, this window is genuinely one of the most rewarding times of year to be in the water on Koh Tao. Less visibility, infinitely more detail.

There are many dive sites around Koh Tao to choose from and each one has their own unique advantages and points of interest. Dive sites range from shallow sites with colorful and vibrant coral reefs, gorgeous fish species, and sea turtles, to deep pinnacle sites hosting an array of large pelagic species like whale sharks. No matter which site you go to, you’ll swim away with great memories of fun diving on Koh Tao!

Each dive site is located no more than 50 minutes from the dive shop and each trip out you will experience two incredible dives.

Koh Tao Fun Diving Itinerary

Here are the basic schedules for our daily fun diving trips.

Morning Boat

7:00 – Meet your divemaster at our dive center
07.30 – We head out to the big dive boat, leaving from the beach when the waves allow it!
8:30-12:30 – Two dives, with a one hour break between them
12:45-13:00 – Arrive back on land.

Afternoon Boat

12:30 – Meet your divemaster at our dive centre.
12:45 – Head out to the big dive boat.
13:00-16:30 – Two lovely (shallow/training) dives
17:00-17.30 – Arrive back on land.

Night Dive

17:30 – Meet your divemaster at our dive center
18:00 – Longtail leaves to head out to the big dive boat.
18:30 – Night dive.
19:30 – Arrive back on land.

Don’t forget! Because of the extra nitrogen your body builds up while scuba diving, you cannot fly within 24hrs of your last dive.

Are you Refreshed?

Please do not book your fun dives in if you are in need of a Refresher first! Here’s a rule of thumb for scuba refreshers based on experience level:

• Under 20 dives and haven’t dived in a year: Refresher course plus 2 easy, shallow afternoon dives to 12 meters maximum before resuming normal diving.
• Between 20-50 dives: Pool refresher only to practice fundamental skills and knock off the rust.
• 50+ dives and haven’t dived in 2 years: 2 afternoon ‘check out’ dives to get back into the rhythm.
