Dive Sail Rock: One of Thailand’s Best Dive Sites Between Koh Tao & Koh Phangan
Embark on an unforgettable diving adventure at Sail Rock, one of Thailand’s premier scuba diving destinations. Located between the islands of Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, Sail Rock is a towering pinnacle that rises 15 meters above sea level and plunges over 40 meters deep, offering an exceptional dive experience for divers of all skill levels.
Why Choose Sail Rock for Your Next Dive in Thailand?
Sail Rock diving is famous for its rich biodiversity, vibrant coral reefs, and unique underwater formations. This site is a magnet for marine life including schools of barracuda, batfish, snapper, trevally, and queenfish. The pinnacle’s hard coral-covered surface provides habitat for many smaller species, making it a paradise for underwater photographers and marine enthusiasts.
One of the most exciting features of Sail Rock is the frequent sighting of whale sharks—the gentle giants of the sea that visit this feeding hotspot seasonally.
Explore the Thrilling ‘Chimney’ Swim-Through at Sail Rock
For divers craving adventure, the famous Sail Rock chimney offers a unique experience. This vertical swim-through starts at about 5 meters and exits around 18 meters, providing an exhilarating underwater tunnel dive through the heart of the pinnacle.
Top Marine Life to Spot at Sail Rock, Koh Tao
Whale Sharks: Occasional sightings of these majestic filter feeders, especially during plankton bloom seasons, create unforgettable moments.
Schooling Barracuda: Witness massive swirling schools of chevron and pickhandle barracuda forming spectacular silver tornadoes around the rock.
Big Eye Trevally: These predatory fish create tight, mesmerizing schools shimmering in the sunlight.
Batfish: Graceful and curious, batfish often approach divers and linger near the pinnacle walls.
Peacock Anemone Shrimp: Macro divers will love spotting these colorful shrimp hiding in sea anemones.
Marbled Groupers: Look for these powerful reef predators lurking in crevices and ledges.
What Level of Diving Certification Do You Need for Sail Rock?
Sail Rock is suitable for any certified scuba diver, including Open Water divers. For exploring the deeper sections and the iconic chimney swim-through, an Advanced Open Water certification is recommended.
This site is ideal for divers working on their Advanced Adventurer course objectives like deep diving and underwater navigation, making Sail Rock a top dive site in Thailand for skill development and thrilling exploration.
