There can be something incredibly alluring about exploring the deeper parts of the ocean. And the more you dive, the more you will want to explore and the deeper you’ll want to dive. So if you want to explore as much of the water column as possible, then the Deep Specialty course is for you.

The Deep Specialty course allows the advanced diver to have access to many more exciting dive sites located in deeper water. It will give you the ability to safely and comfortably plan and conduct dives beyond 30 meters/100 feet, to a maximum depth of 40 meters/130 feet. It’s also a prerequisite for some advanced scuba training.

The Deep Specialty will take you one day.

To enrol in the Deep Specialty course you must have your Open Water diver certification for a SDI Certification and Adventure Deep if you would like to certify with SSI.

Don’t forget! Because of the extra nitrogen your body builds up while scuba diving, you cannot fly within 24hrs of your last dive.

What is the maximum depth I can dive after completing the SSI Deep Specialty? +

Upon completing the course, divers are certified to dive to a maximum depth of 40 meters (130 feet), which opens up new dive sites and deeper wrecks for exploration.

Do I need any prerequisites to take the SSI Deep Specialty? +

Yes, divers must be at least 15 years old and have completed an Open Water Diver certification. Many instructors also recommend having the Advanced Adventurer certification, though it’s not always mandatory.

How many dives are required to complete the course? +

The SSI Deep Diving Specialty typically includes three training dives, during which you’ll progressively dive deeper and practice skills specific to deep diving.

What equipment is necessary for deep diving? +

Beyond standard scuba gear, you may need a dive computer, an SMB (Surface Marker Buoy), a dive light, and backup air sources, especially for deep and extended dives.

What are the risks of deep diving, and how are they addressed in the course? +

Risks like nitrogen narcosis, decompression sickness, and air consumption are covered extensively. The course teaches how to plan dives carefully, monitor gas levels, and use safety stops to prevent problems.

We took our Open Water Diving Course with Big Blue Diving School on Koh Tao. Originally scheduled for March 1st, we had to postpone due to illness. They rescheduled us by two days without any hassle, which we greatly appreciated. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed and trained with passion and professionalism. The first day in the pool gave us fantastic confidence. Our instructor, Lady, was truly professional—she alleviated all our fears of deep water and guided us step by step. We learned a lot! Being a small group of four made it even better, as we felt personally cared for and safe. It was an amazing group, we had the time of our lives, and we ended with a wonderful surprise! Lukas Moore? 5 * !! I was here 1999 and obtained my Deep-Diver Specialty with Steven Sone. Always keeping in mind the friendly atmosphere and high quality of Big Blue I came back 26 years later to refresh and let my wife and my two kids (b, 14 / g, 10) get their first diving experience. So we met Lukas Moore, SSI-Instructor, very experienced, highly professional and qualified. My wife and my daughter gave him a hard time due to their anxiety... Lukas is my top-recommendation. He is funny but serious. He had a quiet and relaxed manner, almost hypnotic influence on my very scared daughter. We really lucked out when we signed up for the basic open diver course with big blue and got our instructor, Lady! She’s been doing this for years, so experienced and seasoned, and yet it felt like she was training for the first time. She was so patient, explained theory clearly, constantly checked our understanding, and welcomed even the most basic questions. I now feel like I truly understand not just the “how” but the “why” behind safe and enjoyable diving. She takes our safety super seriously, so throughout the training, if we didn’t get a technique right, she made sure we repeated exercises till we did, since it’ll make a whole lot of difference in life and death deep underwater! It takes real passion to do what she does, and I’m really grateful to have been trained by such a master, I trust her with my life! We hope more people get the opportunity to be trained by her too. The big blue team and ran things really smoothly. Even with multiple classes happening at the same time, everything was well coordinated and communication between the teams was seamless.
