Sharks are often portrayed as ruthless predators, inspiring fear and misunderstanding in many people. While they are indeed some of the ocean’s most effective hunters, the reality is far more fascinating than the myths. Our Big Blue Shark Ecology Course is designed to help you discover the true nature of these incredible animals and gain a deeper understanding of their importance to the marine environment.
As apex predators, sharks play a critical role in maintaining healthy and balanced ocean ecosystems. By regulating prey populations and removing weak or unhealthy individuals, they help preserve biodiversity and support the overall stability of marine food webs. Their influence extends throughout entire ecosystems, affecting the behaviour and distribution of other species and contributing to the health of habitats such as coral reefs and seagrass meadows.
Unfortunately, many shark populations are declining due to overfishing, habitat degradation, bycatch, and unsustainable practices such as shark finning. The loss of sharks can trigger far-reaching ecological consequences, impacting marine ecosystems, fisheries, local economies, and coastal communities that depend on healthy oceans for food security and tourism.
Whether you’re fascinated by sharks or feel nervous about encountering them underwater, this course offers an excellent opportunity to replace fear with knowledge. You’ll learn about shark biology, behaviour, ecology, and conservation, while exploring the reasons why these animals are so often misunderstood. The course also includes guidance on how to safely and responsibly interact with sharks while diving, helping you feel more confident and comfortable in their presence.
Upon completion of the program, you’ll earn the Big Blue Shark Ecology Specialty Certification and, more importantly, gain a new appreciation for the vital role sharks play in our oceans.
This is a classroom-based course with no required dives. However, if you’d like to combine your learning with practical underwater experiences, additional dives can be arranged at our standard fun diving rates.
Don’t forget! Because of the extra nitrogen your body builds up while scuba diving, you cannot fly within 24hrs of your last dive.
Are you fit to dive?
