If you’re considering joining us at Big Blue for your Open Water Diving Course on Koh Tao, you might be curious about how we structure the learning process. Here’s a quick overview of what to expect. Ideally, you would have booked online through our website, especially during peak times like after Full Moon parties on Koh Phangan or during the bustling months of December-March and July-October.
Overview of the Open Water Course on Koh Tao:
Day One: Confined Water Diving
The SSI Open Water Course starts at 8:45 am, where you’ll meet your instructor and fellow divers on the course. The day kicks off with an introduction to the diving equipment, including theory discussions. Following that, a gradual and personalized pool session begins, starting in the shallow end and progressing to the deep end. The day concludes around 5 pm, allowing you to unwind for the evening.
Day Two: First 2 dives to 12 meters
Starting around 10 am, you’ll engage in more dive theory and prepare for a straightforward 50-question multiple-choice exam. Once successfully completed, you break for lunch and meet your instructor at 12 pm to receive the equipment. By 12:30 pm, you’ll board a dive boat for your initial two open water dives at a calm, sunny bay on the island. Dive briefings, equipment setup, and underwater exploration are all part of the experience. After the dives, back on land around 5 pm, you’ll learn proper equipment rinsing and log your dives with your instructor.
Day Three: Final 2 dives to 18 meters
An early start leads to dives three and four at some of the best dive sites. With increased confidence, you’ll go a bit deeper and witness the stunning marine life around Koh Tao. Dive sites change, offering varied experiences. Upon completing the fourth dive, congratulations, you’re now a certified open water diver qualified to reach 18 meters. Back on land by 11 am, after equipment cleaning and dive logging, your instructor provides a debrief, hands over your certification card, and discusses potential further certifications. Now, it’s time to relax and celebrate your achievement!
Day 4 & 5: The Advanced Course!
Beyond the Open Water Course, the Advanced Course is the logical progression. Over one and a half days, you’ll complete five dives, each with a distinct theme. This course introduces underwater navigation, night diving, buoyancy refinement, and depth experience, certifying you to dive up to 30 meters. It not only expands your exploration opportunities but also boosts your confidence as a diver. Plus, it’s another reason to celebrate at the bar! So, what’s stopping you?
