Yellow Margin Triggerfish
Scientific name Pseudobalistes flavimarginatus
The Yellow Margin Triggerfish is one of the larger and more striking triggerfish species found around Koh Tao. Growing up to around 60 cm in length, they are instantly recognisable by their dark, textured body covered in fine patterning and the bright yellow edging along their dorsal, anal and tail fins.
They have the classic triggerfish profile — oval body, powerful jaws and a prominent first dorsal spine (the “trigger”) that can be locked upright for protection. Compared to their bigger cousin, the Titan Triggerfish, Yellow Margins tend to be slightly less confrontational, but they still command respect.
Around Koh Tao, they’re often seen cruising reef slopes and sandy patches, either alone or in pairs. They spend much of their time foraging — flipping rubble, crunching through hard-shelled prey and investigating crevices with surprising precision. When they move, it’s deliberate and confident.
Yellow Margin Triggerfish play an important role in reef health by controlling populations of sea urchins, crustaceans and other invertebrates. Their strong jaws allow them to crush shells with ease, preventing certain species from overgrazing coral structures.
Like most triggerfish, they can become territorial during nesting season, defending sand nests laid on the seabed. However, outside of this period, they are generally calm and focused on feeding.
A close encounter with a Yellow Margin Triggerfish is a great reminder that reef fish aren’t just colourful — they’re tough, intelligent and built to survive.

Divemaster's tip
If you spot a Yellow Margin hovering low over a sandy patch and circling tightly, you may be near a nest. Give them space and swim calmly around the area rather than directly over it.
Watch for their feeding behaviour — when they start blowing sand or flipping coral rubble, smaller fish often gather nearby to pick off scraps. It’s a mini feeding event in motion.
What do they eat?
Yellow Margin Triggerfish feed on sea urchins, crabs, molluscs and other hard-shelled invertebrates. Their powerful teeth are specially adapted for crushing shells, making them highly effective reef predators.
They are active daytime hunters and a key part of maintaining balance on coral reefs around Koh Tao.
