Do I need a Scuba Review?

“Hi, I’m certified and I want to go scuba diving on Koh Tao but I haven’t dived since before Covid, do I need a Scuba Review?”

If you want to go scuba diving but haven’t dived for a while, it’s essential to take some steps to ensure your safety and comfort underwater. Here’s what you should do:

Mastering neutral buoyancy is the single most important skill in diving.

Do I need a Scuba Review?

Definitely take your scuba diving refresher course, or Scuba Review especially if you haven’t dived for over a year. Many dive shops and organizations offer refresher programs specifically designed for certified divers who haven’t been diving in a while. The course will review important skills, safety procedures, and equipment usage, helping you regain confidence and competence in the water.

Check Your Certification Level

Some people think they have a license to Scuba dive because they tried diving in Greece one time! Some people think they can dive as deep as they like on an Open Water license! Ensure that your scuba diving certification is valid and hasn’t expired. If it has expired, you may need to retake the certification course before going diving again.

Review the Dive Theory

Take some time to review dive theory, such as dive tables, dive planning, and decompression procedures. This will help refresh your understanding of the physics and physiology of diving, and ensure you understand why you are diving the dive you are planning.

Gather Information

Research the dive location you plan to visit. Say hello to your Dive center prior to your start time so you familiarize yourself with the shop, the system, and also chat about local dive conditions, marine life, dive sites and any potential hazards.

Check Equipment

Inspect your scuba gear and make sure it’s in good working condition. If it’s your own equipment and you haven’t used it for a while, it’s a good idea to get it serviced by a professional technician. Ask your Dive Center if they’ll look at it for you.

Start in Easy Conditions

When you go diving again, choose dive sites with easy conditions and shallow depths. This will allow you to acclimate to being underwater and regain your diving skills more comfortably. Our Refreshers are held in a nice shallow bay or beach, way more exciting than in a pool and far more realistic!

Dive with a Buddy

It’s always safer to dive with a buddy, especially if you haven’t dived for a while. Having someone with you can provide assistance if needed and enhance the overall diving experience. If you haven’t got a buddy don’t worry we will provide one for you.

Listen to Your Dive Guide

If you’re diving with a guide or a dive master, listen to their briefing carefully and follow their instructions during the dive. They can provide valuable insights about the site and help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Take It Slow

Don’t push yourself to dive too deep or attempt complicated dives right away. Ease back into scuba diving by starting with simpler dives and gradually progressing as you become more comfortable.

Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is crucial, especially when diving. Drink plenty of water before and after diving to help prevent dehydration.

Prioritize Safety

Iif you have any doubts or concerns, do not hesitate to consult with your dive guide or a certified diving professional before going underwater. Remember that scuba diving is a skill-based activity, and taking the necessary steps to refresh your skills and knowledge will significantly contribute to a safe and enjoyable experience.
