Have you considered taking a step beyond your Advanced Diving Course? Maybe you’re looking towards your Divemaster Course? Well then you may want to know a little bit more about taking your Rescue Diver Course here on Koh Tao since you’ll need it to start your professional level training.
Why Should I become a Rescue Diver?
Stress is a major cause of diving accidents and it can negatively impact rescue situations. The Rescue Diver Course teaches you the scuba skills and knowledge you’ll need to recognize and deal with stress, prevent accidents and properly deal with scuba-related emergency situations.
What Do I Need to Start the Course?
You’ll need to be certified in First Aid Techniques and have a valid CPR certification to start the Rescue Diver Course. Luckily we offer that training together in a single course!
The React Right Course will train you in the assessment of an accident scene, stabilization of the victim, first aid techniques, and use of emergency oxygen. You’ll learn how to assess the victim and the surrounding scene before providing help, how to stabilize the victim and provide CPR when necessary, and how to use basic first aid techniques to deal with non-lethal injuries. Since injuries in scuba diving are usually related to gases absorbed by the body, the optional O2 Provider component will teach you how to administer 100% oxygen as an immediate response and how to recognize and use different oxygen tank valves and mask types.
The O2 Provider component of the course is optional, but if you plan to move on to do your Divemaster Course you will need to be a certified O2 Provider.
What’s the Rescue Diver Course all about?
Once you’ve completed your React Right Course, you’re ready for 2 days of fun and quick thinking as you get trained by your Scuba Diving Instructor on the different variables that come in to play when dealing with a panicked diver on the surface and underwater. You’ll examine different scenarios one by one and weigh the best course of action to take as a Rescue Diver. Thinking on your feet and making decisions according to the situation is the most important lesson when becoming a Rescue Diver. You may have a situation whereby a nervous buddy prior to the dive could lead to an underwater problem, or you may encounter equipment problems or problematic marine life interactions, or even environmental conditions that can lead to an accident scenario. Anticipating the problem and factoring in the best response is what separates a life saving scenario from what could be a fatal scenario.
On the second day of your Rescue Diver Course, your Scuba Diving Instructor will create a situation where an accident is simulated and you will need to act appropriately as a Rescue Diver. You will need to factor in all the elements at play, incorporate all the knowledge you’ve gotten from your course, and simulate a successful rescue. Once you can demonstrate the ability to perform a scuba diving rescue you’ll become a certified Rescue Diver!
