Like the argument between Pepsi and Coke, scuba diving versus freediving gets people pretty worked up about their opinions. Some people are die-hard scuba diving fans, while others can’t stand all the gear and noise so prefer to freedive. So why would you freedive when you can go scuba diving?
Well, for starters, when you freedive you don’t just see the fish, you become the fish! The best part of freediving is getting even more in touch with the world below the surface. When you go freediving for the first time you realize that you’re completely unburdened with gear. You can move and play in the water however you like. You can go straight down and back up again, or go sit on the bottom, or swim around the dive site scaring scuba divers.
Without any noise or bubbles, you feel like you’re more in touch with the environment around you. When you have loads of gear on you may see the environment, but you don’t experience it as intimately. You can hear the fish and invertebrates going about their lives. Wildlife is much less suspicious of you when you’re not blowing bubbles, so animals tend to either get closer to freedivers or let freedivers come closer to them.
Scuba Diving is like getting in the RV and driving over the pass, while freediving is putting on a backpack and hiking up the mountain. One is more high-tech while the other gets back to basics. One is like learning something completely new and the other is like going back to being a kid and holding your breath in a swimming pool. Ultimately, you’re going to see the same things, but in very different ways!
