Skin Diving on Koh Tao

Have you ever considered skin diving on Koh Tao? Do you even know what skin diving actually is? Diving without scuba equipment is often referred to as ‘skin diving’ or ‘snorkeling’. Both can use a mask, snorkel, and fins, but freediving, as it has become more popularly known as, will always involve a breath-hold, no matter how deep you go. Humans first started freediving through necessity, for food, trade-able items or items lost overboard, however in more recent times, freediving has evolved into a recreational pastime, a way to take photos, catch food, and as a sport.

Freediving is all about silence, being at one with nature and instilling confidence in yourself to do something you never thought possible. Can you imagine being able to hold your breath for over 3 minutes? Can you imagine being able to descend to the depths reached by scuba divers without a tank on your back? You won’t be able to achieve those feats while doing beginner freediving but you’ll start to learn the skills you’ll need to get you to a much more advanced level.

On the Basic Freediver Course, we’ll introduce you to a brand new underwater world. It’s a world where we will need to adjust our body but it’s worth it because few people get to experience the underwater world in such a pure way. A scuba diver is as noisy as a fortress under siege. The deep inhalation of air through the regulator followed by the incessant barrage of bubbles, well it frightens all the underwater marine life away. But a freediver is as silent as a still wind! No inhalation, no bubbles, no beeping computers.

You will learn simple beginner freediving techniques to swim underwater comfortably, and you’ll discuss physiology, breathing, relaxation, and rescue techniques. Afterwards, you’ll have a breathing and relaxation practice session. Finally, there is an open water session where you’ll put into practice all the fundamental freediving concepts you’ve learned so far.

Big Blue Freediving offers this course through SSI and Big Blue Freediving will provide all equipment, boat trips, materials, etc. for the duration of the course. Drop in and see us, and shoot us a message to find out more.
