Diving with a whaleshark is one of the biggest attractions here on Koh Tao since we get more whalesharks than anywhere in the world. We’re always happy when a boat full of our divers gets to swim with the biggest fish in the sea, but we get extra happy when we’re the only boat on the dive site. So it was pretty awesome yesterday morning when a group of our divers was able to experience a whaleshark at Chumphon Pinnacle while being the only ones there!
Getting the dive site of Chumphon Pinnacle all to yourselves isn’t something that often happens. Being one of the best dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand, Chumphon Pinnacle is usually a popular site for all the dive centres on the island. So when we arrived yesterday morning and saw that we were the only ones there, we made the most of it and spent both dives on the pinnacle. And we were rewarded with a whaleshark on both dives.
Whalesharks are unquestionably the marine creature all divers want to encounter. Some people go to places that feed whalesharks in order to make sure they get to see one on their vacation, but this isn’t a great way to experience this wonderful creature, nor ensure it’s survival. Being able to offer our divers a chance encounter with a whaleshark so often gives our divers the opportunity to cross this guy off their bucket lists in the most natural and sustainable way.
