Marine life at Aow Tanote...
Set along the rugged east coast of Koh Tao, Aow Tanote (Tanote Bay) offers a beautifully varied depth profile with something for every level of diver. The gently sloping bay begins in shallow water at around 3–5 meters before descending to approximately 18–22 meters along its outer reef edges. Scattered granite boulders and coral bommies create multiple levels to explore, allowing for relaxed, multi-level dive plans with long bottom times.
Currents & Conditions
Being on the east coast, Aow Tanote is typically dived during the June to September southwest monsoon, when the island provides shelter from prevailing winds. Conditions are generally calm, though mild currents can occasionally be present. Visibility commonly ranges from 10–25 meters depending on plankton levels and weather patterns. Water temperatures remain warm and comfortable year-round at 27–30°C.
Underwater Landscape & Marine Life
Aow Tanote blends sandy patches, rocky granite formations, a few artificial structures and healthy coral growth into one balanced and scenic dive. Coral-covered bommies host a vibrant array of reef life. Schools of fusiliers shimmer in the blue, often joined by snapper and juvenile barracuda. Butterflyfish, angelfish, and parrotfish add constant colour across the reef, while moray eels peer from cracks between the rocks. The sandy sections are excellent for spotting blue-spotted stingrays and smaller macro life hiding in plain sight. There are a few artificial structures here including a motorbike, a small catamaran and some reef blocks to encourage marine life, and it seems to be working here! On quieter days, the bay has a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere — a scenic east coast dive that feels slightly removed from the busier west side sites.
Skill Level & Certification
Suitable for Open Water divers in calm conditions, with plenty of shallow reef to enjoy. Advanced Open Water divers can explore the deeper edges and make the most of the site’s full depth range. Good buoyancy control is recommended to comfortably navigate the boulder formations and protect the coral.
Access & Logistics
Diving Aow Tanote adds a sense of adventure to both the morning and afternoon sites. Typically our journey will begin with a short taxi ride to the east side at Hin Wong Bay, where we board our shuttle boat to reach the main dive vessel. During monsoon season, the 15–20 minute boat journey from the sheltered side of the island keeps travel time efficient and comfortable. The site is usually paired with another east coast location such as Hin Wong Pinnacle, Laem Thien or Shark Island — scenic, relaxed, and a very picturesque part of Koh Tao.
