Rising from the seabed on Koh Tao’s spectacular eastern flank, Hin Wong Pinnacle is a classic submerged seamount that delivers depth, structure, and the feeling of diving a true offshore formation. The pinnacle begins around 12 meters and slopes down beyond 30 meters, with most recreational profiles exploring the upper sections between roughly 18–28 meters. Draped in coral and surrounded by open blue water, every descent here feels purposeful — like you’re dropping onto a hidden mountain beneath the sea.
Currents & Conditions
Hin Wong Pinnacle enjoys generally excellent visibility, often in the 10–20 meter range when conditions align. Being more exposed than many west coast sites, mild to moderate currents can occasionally sweep through, attracting pelagic life and adding a little excitement to the dive. Water temperatures remain reliably warm at 27–30°C throughout the year, though thermoclines can sometimes roll through and briefly freshen things up.
Underwater Landscape & Marine Life
This is a site that rewards divers who love to look outward as much as inward. The pinnacle itself features a nice long trench to swim thru and the rock itself is layered with hard corals, sea whips, and anemones, creating texture from top to bottom. Schools of fusiliers shimmer above the reef while bannerfish and butterflyfish hover in the current. Trevally and queenfish are regular visitors, often hunting through the bait balls, and it’s not uncommon to spot barracuda cruising past in formation. Closer to the reef, scorpionfish blend seamlessly into the coral, giant moray eels peer from rocky crevices, razorfish hang upside down as they do in their schools, and triggerfish looking to nest patrol the surrounding sands. On particularly good days, the blue can surprise you — cobia, rainbow runners, and even the occasional whale shark have been known to make unforgettable appearances. Hin Wong Pinnacle captures that exhilarating balance between big boulder detail and big-fish potential that keeps divers coming back.
Skill Level & Certification
Best suited to Advanced Open Water divers due to the depth profile, though experienced Open Water divers may enjoy the shallower sections when conditions are calm. Comfortable buoyancy and situational awareness help divers fully appreciate the site, especially if currents are present.
Access & Logistics
Diving the east coast always feels a little more adventurous — and Hin Wong Pinnacle is no exception. We meet at 7:20am and begin with a short taxi ride to Hin Wong Pier, where our shuttle boat transfers us comfortably to the dive boat. The pinnacle is typically dived during the June to September Southwest monsoon, when the island provides shelter and keeps travel time to around 20 minutes. Trips usually include Hin Wong Pinnacle alongside another nearby dive site selected based on the day’s conditions, ensuring a varied and exciting morning. Expect to be back around 12:30pm, with that satisfying “great dive” feeling lasting far longer.
