Bull Shark
Scientific name Carcharhinus leucas
The Bull Shark is one of the ocean’s most powerful and adaptable predators. Recognisable by its stocky body, broad blunt snout and confident, steady movement, this species has a reputation for strength and resilience. Unlike many other sharks, Bull Sharks can tolerate freshwater and are known globally for venturing into rivers and estuaries as well as coastal seas.
In Thailand, Bull Shark encounters are rare around Koh Tao itself but are occasionally reported in deeper offshore waters and more commonly in areas like the Gulf’s outer pinnacles. They prefer murkier coastal environments, river mouths, and areas with strong current where prey is abundant.
Bull Sharks are naturally curious but not aggressive without reason. Like all sharks, they are highly attuned to their surroundings and rely on powerful senses to detect movement and vibrations in the water.
Despite their formidable reputation, encounters are extremely uncommon for recreational divers in this region.

What do they eat?
Bull Sharks are opportunistic predators, feeding on fish, rays, smaller sharks, crustaceans, and occasionally marine mammals.
As apex predators, they play a crucial role in maintaining balance within marine ecosystems — a reminder of the raw power that still exists in our oceans.
