Towering 15 meters above the surface and dropping to 40 meters below, Sail Rock is widely considered the crown jewel of the Gulf of Thailand. This iconic pinnacle delivers depth, drama, and diversity in one unforgettable site. It’s a circular dive site so there can be dramatic sunlight and and ominous shade the shallower you are, while deeper profiles offer experienced divers the chance to fully explore one of Thailand’s most celebrated underwater landscapes.
Currents & Conditions
Conditions are typically at their best from February through May, when calmer seas often bring reduced current and outstanding visibility — frequently pushing past 30 meters. As an offshore site, Sail Rock can experience surface movement, adding to the sense of adventure. Expect warm waters between 28–30°C, with the occasional thermocline providing a refreshing shift at depth.
Underwater Landscape & Marine Life
Sail Rock is pure underwater theatre. It’s steep walls are draped in soft corals, sponges, branches and thriving anemones, creating a reef bursting with color and motion.
The legendary chimney swim-through — beginning around 6 meters down to 18meters— slices vertically through the pinnacle and delivers one of the most exciting passages in the region. It’s the moment divers talk about long after the trip is over.
In the blue, massive schools of jacks, barracuda and batfish circle endlessly, while trevally hunt along the current lines. And then there’s the real headline: Sail Rock is one of Thailand’s most reliable locations for whale shark encounters. Seeing one here isn’t just a possibility — it’s exactly why many divers keep coming back.
Skill Level & Certification
Open Water divers are welcome to join, but this is a site that truly shines when you have the freedom to go deeper. Advanced Open Water (or higher) is strongly recommended to experience Sail Rock at its absolute best.
Access & Logistics
Perfectly positioned between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, Sail Rock sits just under two hours from Koh Tao by boat and is worth every minute of the journey. Our full-day trip includes two dives at Sail Rock with breakfast and lunch onboard, plus a third dive at Shark Island on the way home — turning the day into a true dive expedition. It’s also a signature site for boats departing from Koh Phangan and Koh Samui.
When We Dive Sail Rock
We run trips every three days (conditions permitting), meeting at 7:30am and returning around 5pm. Weather can be more changeable from June to August and again in late November through early January, but when the window opens — this is the trip you don’t want to miss.
