Marine life at Shark Island...
Located just south east of Koh Tao, Shark Island so called because when viewed from certain angles — especially from the south or southeast — the rocky outcrop resembles a shark’s dorsal fin breaking the surface of the water. From a distance, it genuinely looks like a shark cruising just offshore. Shark Island is one of the island’s most dynamic and visually striking dive sites. This island whose peaks give the exposed granite outcrop slopes from shallow reef tops sloping from the surface down to sandy patches and rocky ledges at 24–30 meters. The easy depth profile makes it ideal for long, meandering dives, whether you’re exploring the shallows or dropping deeper along the reef’s dramatic edges. The layout naturally encourages a circular route, with new terrain revealing itself at every turn.
Currents & Conditions
Shark Island can experience mild to moderate currents, which often bring in excellent visibility — commonly 15–30 meters on good days. When current is present, the reef comes alive with movement and schooling fish. In calmer conditions, it becomes a relaxed and colorful exploration dive. Water temperatures remain warm year-round at 27–30°C, making it comfortable in just a 3mm wetsuit.
Underwater Landscape & Marine Life
This site is all about variety. Large granite boulders create small hideaways, gullies, and ridgelines covered in hard corals and soft coral patches. The reef structure provides shelter for an impressive range of marine life. Schools of fusiliers and yellowtail barracuda frequently circle in the blue, while trevally patrol the drop-offs hunting through baitfish. Closer to the reef, you’ll find blue-spotted stingrays resting on sandy patches, giant moray eels, cuttlefish and white eyed moray eels tucked into crevices, and groupers hovering near overhangs. The site is also well known for its triggerfish populations and vibrant reef fish activity. On lucky days, whalesharks may cruise past in the distance — a fitting reminder of how the site earned its name. Shark Island consistently delivers that perfect blend of reef color, pelagic energy, and classic Koh Tao granite topography.
Skill Level & Certification
Suitable for Open Water divers in calm conditions, with plenty of shallower reef to enjoy. However, Advanced Open Water certification is recommended to explore the deeper sections and to feel comfortable if currents are running. Good buoyancy control enhances the experience, especially when navigating the reef contours and swim-throughs.
Access & Logistics
Shark Island is typically scheduled as one of our premier morning dive sites or our third dive on our full day trips to Sail Rock due to unpredictability and vibrant conditions. We meet at 7:20am and depart directly from Sairee Beach via our shuttle boats to our main dive boat. Travel time is 30 minutes, with a lovely scenic trip around Koh Tao. Sometimes we pair this site with a second dive at nearby locations such as Hin Wong Pinnacle or Aow Leuk, depending on conditions. Expect to return around 12:30pm, on a 2 dive trip or 17:00pm on a Full Day Trip to Sail Rock.
