The SSI Instructor Training Course
The instructor training course is usually conducted over 10 days and is immediately followed by the Instructor Examination (IE). Training to become a Dive Instructor is designed to emphasize learning and development to prepare you to function independently as a dive instructor.
During the course, you will gain the knowledge, skills and coaching techniques needed to teach new divers effectively and safely. The focus is on real-world application of skills so your performance is measured throughout the program by your instructor trainer. This is meant to assist you in improving your skills and abilities. Practice makes perfect! You are also given a thorough introduction to the business of scuba diving – including economic, social, cultural, legal, governmental and environmental concerns, as well as marketing and customer service. By the time you leave the course, you’ll know everything there is to know about working at a dive centre and teaching scuba courses – all backed up with real-life experience.
Dive Instructor Internship Program.
Once the course has finished, if you decide to stay on Koh Tao, you could consider doing an internship with Big Blue Diving to further reinforce your new skills. You’ll be assigned to your own mentor who you will shadow on all their courses for a minimum 2 week period. Slowly, your mentor will start giving your portions of the courses to teach and then will give you pointers on how to improve. By the end of the internship, you will be ready to teach the last course on your own while your mentor watches proudly. It’s an excellent way to begin your new teaching career.
