Marine life at Japanese Gardens...
Located on the eastern side of Koh Nang Yuan, Japanese Gardens is one of the most picturesque and accessible dive sites near Koh Tao. The site is beautifully shallow, beginning at just 2–3 meters and gently sloping to around 10–12 meters at its deepest points. The compact layout allows for long, relaxed dive times, making it ideal for slow exploration and extended shallow profiles.
Currents & Conditions
Japanese Gardens is generally very sheltered, with calm water and minimal current for most of the year. Visibility often ranges from 10–25 meters depending on season and plankton levels, and the shallow depth means excellent natural light throughout the dive. Water temperatures remain consistently warm at 27–30°C year-round. Its protected position makes it one of the island’s most reliable and comfortable dive locations.
Underwater Landscape & Marine Life
As the name suggests, Japanese Gardens is all about coral structure and balance. The site features carefully spaced coral bommies rising from a sandy seabed, creating a natural “garden” layout that feels intentionally designed. Hard corals dominate, with brain corals and table corals forming intricate patterns across the reef. Anemones sway gently in the current, often hosting resident clownfish. Schools of fusiliers and snapper pass overhead, while angelfish, butterflyfish, and parrotfish weave between the coral heads. Blue-spotted stingrays occasionally rest on the sand, and turtles are sometimes spotted cruising through the shallows. The shallow depth enhances colours and light, making this one of the most photogenic sites around the island.

Perfect for beginners, Open Water students, refreshers, and buoyancy practice thanks to its shallow profile and calm conditions. It’s also a fantastic site for snorkeling and introductory dives. Certified divers appreciate it as a relaxed fun dive or for underwater photography, particularly macro and natural light work.
Access & Logistics
Japanese Gardens is regularly featured on our morning schedules due to its convenient location and consistent conditions. We meet at 12:20pm and depart directly from Sairee Beach via our shuttle boats to our main dive boat. The short travel time maximises your time underwater and keeps the morning easy and enjoyable. It’s often paired with Twins or White Rock for a varied two-dive trip, with return to shore around 17:30pm — shallow, colourful, and effortlessly enjoyable diving.
