Marine life at Mango Bay...
Tucked into the northern end of Koh Tao, Mango Bay is one of the island’s most sheltered and accessible dive sites. The gently sloping seabed begins at the beach and gradually descends to approximately 12–14 meters at its deepest points. This wide sandy bay, framed by rocky headlands and coral patches, creates long, relaxed dive profiles with plenty of bottom time — perfect for beginners, for easy exploration and skill-building alike.
Currents & Conditions
Mango Bay is known for its calm, protected conditions, particularly during the northeast monsoon season. Currents are typically light to non-existent, making it an ideal site for training dives and beginners. Visibility usually ranges from 8–20 meters depending on plankton levels, which can fluctuate seasonally. Water temperatures remain consistently warm at 27–30°C year-round, keeping dives comfortable and relaxed.
Underwater Landscape & Marine Life
The bay features a mix of sandy seabed, coral bommies, and rocky reef edges with a few artificial structures to the northern edge. While the coral density isn’t as dramatic as some offshore pinnacles, Mango Bay makes up for it with fish life and accessibility. Large schools of fusiliers and snapper often gather in the shallows, creating shimmering walls of movement just beneath the surface. Rabbitfish, parrotfish, and wrasse cruise the reef patches, while juvenile reef species shelter around the coral heads. The sandy areas are excellent for spotting stingrays, gobies, and the occasional peacock sole or juvenile batfish. It’s also a great site for sting ray and eel encounters during quieter moments. Mango Bay has a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere underwater — an easy dive that still feels alive and engaging.
Skill Level & Certification
Perfect for beginners, Discover Scuba experiences, Open Water courses, and refreshers thanks to its shallow depth and calm conditions. It’s also a comfortable site for certified divers who simply want a relaxed, fish-filled dive. The sandy bottom provides a forgiving environment for practising buoyancy and skills without impacting coral.
Access & Logistics
Mango Bay is typically scheduled as one of our more sheltered options when conditions favour the north side of the island. We meet at 12:20pm and depart directly from Sairee Beach via our shuttle boats to our main dive boat. Travel time is short, keeping the morning smooth and efficient. The site is often paired with another nearby location to create a varied two-dive trip, with return to shore around 17:30pm — easy diving, calm seas, and plenty of fish to get you into diving the right way.
