Marine life at Laem Thien Caves...
Carved into the rugged eastern coastline of Koh Tao, Laem Thien Caves is one of the island’s most adventurous dive sites. A dramatic collection of granite boulders drop into the blue forming a series of trenches, and swim-throughs typically ranging from about 8 meters down to 18–20 meters. Light beams piercing through the openings create a cinematic atmosphere that makes every descent feel like an exploration dive.
Currents & Conditions
This cape called Laem Thien often rewards divers with excellent visibility — frequently 15–30 meters on good days. Conditions are usually calm during favorable weather, though surge can occasionally be present when it gets wavier. Water temperatures remain a comfortable 27–30°C year-round.
Underwater Landscape & Marine Life
Laem Thien is all about topography and drama. Massive granite formations form caverns where natural light dances across the rock, creating incredible photo opportunities. The swim through’s are spacious and easily navigated, offering the thrill of overhead environments while remaining comfortably within recreational limits. Marine life thrives in the dark. Giant groupers are often seen hovering near the entrances, while schools of fusiliers stream past in the blue. Look closely and you may spot sweetlips sheltering beneath ledges, moray eels peering from cracks, and blue-spotted stingrays resting on nearby sandy patches. Trevally frequently patrol the area, and during quieter moments the site can feel wonderfully untouched — a hidden corner of Koh Tao that still delivers a true sense of discovery. Few dives around the island match this blend of structure, light, and atmosphere.
Skill Level & Certification
Suitable for confident Open Water divers in calm conditions, though Advanced Open Water certification is strongly recommended to fully appreciate the caverns and varied terrain. Good buoyancy is key to comfortably enjoying the swim-throughs while protecting the fragile environment.
Access & Logistics
Reaching the island’s east side adds a touch of expedition to the morning — and it’s well worth it. We meet at 7:20am and typically return by 12:30pm. Each trip includes one dive at Laem Thien Caves, followed by a second dive at another nearby site chosen according to the day’s conditions — keeping the experience dynamic and rewarding. This is an East coast dive which means we start our journey with a taxi ride to Hin Wong Pier where we meet our shuttle boat to take us to the dive boat. We dive Laem Thien Caves during the June to September Southwest monsoon so a 20 minute trip from Hin Wong in the shelter of the island makes this an ideal morning adventure with minimal travel time. We meet at 7:20am and typically return by 12:30pm. This dive is usually scheduled as the 2nd site on our morning trips to Shark Island or Hin Wong Pinnacle.
