Laem Thien Bay
Marine life at Laem Thien Bay...
Tucked along the dramatic eastern coastline of Koh Tao, Laem Thien Bay offers a wide, gently sloping reef that begins in shallow water at around 4–6 meters and descends to approximately 12–14 meters. Unlike the nearby swim throughs on the other side of the cape of Laem Thien Caves, the bay itself provides a more open and expansive reef layout, allowing for relaxed multi-level dive profiles with plenty of bottom time and easy navigation.
Currents & Conditions
Laem Thien Bay is typically dived during the June to September southwest monsoon, when the east coast benefits from natural shelter. Conditions are usually calm, though mild currents can occasionally be present. Visibility commonly ranges from 10–25 meters depending on plankton levels and weather patterns. Water temperatures remain consistently warm at 27–30°C year-round, making for comfortable, easy diving.
Underwater Landscape & Marine Life
The bay features a mix of granite rock formations, coral bommies, and sandy patches that create a balanced and visually varied dive. Hard corals spread across the shallows, while deeper sections reveal larger boulders and reef ledges. Schools of fusiliers shimmer in mid-water, often joined by snapper moving in loose formations. Trevally and queenfish occasionally patrol the blue, adding flashes of speed and silver. Closer to the reef, moray eels peer from cracks in the granite, and blue-spotted stingrays rest on sandy sections. Butterflyfish, angelfish, and wrasse bring steady colour to the reef face. Laem Thien Bay offers a calm but lively east coast experience — less dramatic than the caves, but rich in reef life and open swimming space.
Skill Level & Certification
Suitable for Open Water divers in calm conditions, with plenty of shallow reef to explore comfortably. Advanced Open Water divers can enjoy the deeper outer sections and extend bottom time along the slope. Good buoyancy control is encouraged to protect coral growth and navigate the varied terrain smoothly.
Access & Logistics
Diving Laem Thien Bay adds a sense of expedition to the afternoon. We meet at 12:20pm and typically start with a taxi transfer to Hin Wong Pier on the east side, where we board our shuttle boat to connect with the main dive vessel. The 15–20 minute boat journey keeps travel time efficient while maintaining that east coast adventure feel. The site is often paired with Aow Leuk or Hin Wong Bay depending on conditions, with return to shore around 17:30pm — scenic, relaxed, and a refreshing change from the busier west coast reefs.
