Marine life at Aow Leuk...
Tucked into a wide, sheltered bay on the southeast coast of Koh Tao, Aow Leuk offers one of the island’s easiest dive sites. The gently sloping reef begins from the surface down to as deep as maybe 10 meters before gradually descending to approximately 18–20 meters way out in the middle of the bay surrounded by nothing but sand. The layout naturally lends itself to very basic dives, with long bottom times and plenty of space to explore coral bommies scattered across the sandy seabed.
Currents & Conditions
Aow Leuk is generally well protected, enjoying calm conditions for most of the year. Currents are typically light to zero, making it comfortable for both training and fun dives. Visibility often ranges between 10–25 meters depending on season and plankton levels. Water temperatures remain consistently warm at 27–30°C year-round. Its sheltered position makes it a reliable option when more exposed sites may be experiencing stronger conditions.
Underwater Landscape & Marine Life
Aow Leuk is all about coral coverage and fish life on a reef. Hard coral gardens stretch across the bay, broken up by sandy channels and granite rock formations. Schools of fusiliers and yellow tail barracuda frequently gather in impressive numbers, forming shimmering clouds in the mid-water. Butterflyfish, angelfish, and parrotfish bring constant colour to the reef, while moray eels and groupers shelter beneath ledges. The sandy patches are prime territory for blue-spotted stingrays, and turtles are occasional but welcome visitors. The reef structure is open and easy to navigate, creating a relaxed and flowing dive that feels both lively and accessible. There is quite a lot of artificial structures set down here during Covid times that look a little confusing as to whether its an eco effort of a dump site which is a little alarming sadly.
Skill Level & Certification
Suitable for Open Water divers in calm conditions, with plenty of shallow reef to enjoy. It’s also a popular site for training dives thanks to its manageable depth and predictable conditions. Advanced divers can explore the deeper sections and enjoy extended bottom times along the outer reef. Good buoyancy control enhances the experience and helps protect the healthy coral growth.
