Hin Wong Bay
Marine life at Hin Wong Bay...
Set along the rugged east coastline of Koh Tao, Hin Wong Bay offers a wide, gently sloping reef that begins in shallow water at around 4–6 meters and descends to approximately 14 meters along the outer edges. The bay’s open layout allows for flexible dive plans, with long multi-level profiles that combine shallow coral gardens and slightly deeper rocky terrain.
Currents & Conditions
Hin Wong Bay is typically dived during the southwest monsoon months, when the island provides shelter on the east side. Conditions are generally calm, though light to moderate currents can occasionally be present depending on tides. Visibility commonly ranges from 10–25 meters, and water temperatures remain a steady 27–30°C year-round. On good days, the bay feels expansive and blue, with excellent natural light across the reef.
Underwater Landscape & Marine Life
The site blends granite boulders, coral bommies, and sandy channels into a varied and visually interesting dive. Hard corals dominate the shallower sections, while deeper areas feature larger rock formations and open patches of sand. Schools of fusiliers and snapper frequently gather mid-water, creating constant movement above the reef. Trevally and queenfish often patrol the edges, darting through baitfish. Moray eels hide between granite cracks, and blue-spotted stingrays rest quietly on sandy patches. Butterflyfish, angelfish, and parrotfish provide steady colour across the reef face. Hin Wong Bay delivers a relaxed yet lively east coast experience, combining fish density with open swimming space.
Skill Level & Certification
Suitable for Open Water divers in calm conditions, with plenty of shallower reef to enjoy. Advanced Open Water divers can explore the deeper outer sections and enjoy extended bottom time. Good buoyancy control is recommended to comfortably navigate the rocky formations and protect coral growth.
