Marine life at Pottery...
Located on the west coast of Koh Tao, the Pottery Dive Site is a shallow artificial reef area best known for its scattered rocks that look like ceramic jars resting across a sandy seabed. Depths typically range from around 5–8 meters. The area is flat and an open layout allow for long, relaxed dive profiles with plenty of time to explore both the pottery features and surrounding reef patches.
Currents & Conditions
Pottery is generally sheltered and enjoys calm to mild conditions for most of the year. Currents are typically light, making it suitable for training dives and relaxed fun dives alike. Visibility commonly ranges from 8–20 meters depending on season and plankton levels. Water temperatures remain consistently warm at 27–30°C year-round, keeping conditions comfortable and predictable.
Underwater Landscape & Marine Life
The site features clusters of rock heads through the sandy patches, which now act as small reef habitats. Over time, these shallow rocks have attracted coral growth and a variety of reef life call this place home including hte cute little yellow juvenile boxfish. Schools of fusiliers and juvenile snapper often gather above the installations, while damselfish defend territories around the shallow bommies. Moray eels and small groupers shelter within gaps between structures, and blue-spotted stingrays are frequently found resting on the surrounding sand. Macro life thrives here — nudibranchs, shrimp, and juvenile reef species are commonly spotted along the encrusted surfaces. The combination of open sand, artificial features, and scattered coral bommies gives Pottery a relaxed, easy-going feel with plenty of detail for those who enjoy slowing down and searching.
Skill Level & Certification
Suitable for Open Water divers in calm conditions and ideal for training, refreshers, and buoyancy practice thanks to its moderate depth and sandy sections. Advanced divers still appreciate it as a relaxed fun dive or for underwater photography, particularly macro-focused dives. Good buoyancy control is encouraged to protect developing coral growth in the area.
Access & Logistics
Pottery is typically scheduled on our west coast afternoon trips as its a great place for learners/ beginners. We meet at 12:20am and depart directly from Sairee Beach via our shuttle boats to our main dive boat. Travel time is short, maximising bottom time and keeping the morning smooth and efficient. The site is often paired with nearby locations such as Twins or White Rock for a varied two-dive trip, with return to shore around 17:30pm — shallow, relaxed, and quietly full of life.
