Scorpion Fish

Scorpionfish are masters of camouflage and among the most perfectly disguised predators on the reef. Their mottled colouring, textured skin and irregular body shape allow them to blend seamlessly into coral, rock and rubble.
Around Koh Tao, they are typically found resting motionless on reef structures or sandy patches between 5–30 metres. What looks like a rock or coral lump may suddenly reveal an eye — often the only giveaway.
They are ambush predators, relying on stillness rather than speed. When prey comes close, they strike with a rapid suction-feeding motion.
Scorpionfish possess venomous spines along their dorsal fin. While not aggressive, they will defend themselves if stepped on or handled, making good buoyancy and awareness essential for divers.

Move slowly and scan carefully — look for eyes and subtle outlines rather than obvious shapes.
Never place hands on rocks or coral when stabilising yourself. Many scorpionfish rely on their camouflage and won’t move if approached.
What do they eat?
Scorpionfish feed mainly on small fish and crustaceans.
Using their excellent camouflage and lightning-fast strike, they play an important role as stealth predators within Koh Tao’s reef ecosystem.
