Fun Diving for Freedivers

We’re pretty sure that Big Blue Freediving is the only dive centre on Koh Tao that specializes in fun diving for freedivers who are certified already. Once you are certified as a Freediver we would love to show you the underwater Koh Tao that you have come here to witness.

Koh Tao has so many special places underwater that as a freediver you can get to but as a Scuba Diver you will find just aren’t possible. Obviously, when it comes to Scuba Diving the diver descends to their deepest point of the dive at the beginning of the dive and therefore there are many area’s that get missed by the scuba diver. This is the epitome of fun diving for freedivers as we can swim thru these places forwards, backwards up and down! This is especially the case when we get to freedive some of the islands many swim thru’s.

Koh Tao, often nicknamed ‘The Rock’, is basically one gigantic granite rock which over millions of years the rock has eroded away, so consequently one of the first things you will see as you approach Koh Tao by boat is the island is just a mess of eroded rock formations. Large granite rocks that have eroded and fallen, landing on top of other large granite rocks that also eroded and fell, and landed on other large granite rocks that eroded and fell and as you look beneath the surface that there are other large granite rocks that also eroded and fell on each other. The culmination of all these rocks landing haphazardly on top of each other is a collection of awesome swim thru’s. A playground for us freedivers! The east side of Koh Tao has a plethora of these swim thru’s that are rarely dived and visited by scuba divers, but some of the dive sites like Laem Thien Cape, Green Rock and Nang Yuan Cave are also great areas for swim thru’s.

And then, of course, there is Sail Rock! The crème de la crème of diving in the Gulf of Thailand not just for Scuba divers either. There is a 3-meter wide chimney here at Sail Rock that opens about 6 meters below the surface and drops down to an exit at 18 meters. It’s a beautiful site with so much marine life adorned all over that Freediving here makes it that extra bit special just because you can get so close to the big schools of marine life, like the barracuda and the trevally, without them being scared off by your exhalation of bubbles that you create when you scuba dive.

The proximity you can get to these big schools of fish also makes Freediving Chumphon Pinnacle and Southwest Pinnacle a must. At Barracuda Rock on Chumphon Pinnacle, it’s not unheard of to find yourself in a 40-meter long wall surrounded by barracuda, as experience very few Scuba Divers can actually say they have ever had before. Or caught in a river of Rainbow runners at Southwest Pinnacle. And of course, if you are going to see a Whaleshark on Koh Tao then it’s most likely going to be at either Chumphon, Southwest or Sail Rock.
