Marooned half way between Koh Tao island and Koh Phangan island is Sail Rock dive site, a rock that looks like it’s floating on the waves. An unassuming rock on the surface, below the waves it turns into layers of colours and textures and becomes a snow globe of marine creatures. It IS the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand. Sail Rock juts out 15 metres above the surface and descends to a maximum depth of just over 40 metres. Because the rock itself comes out of the water, it’s actually a site that’s accessible to Open Water Divers and more advanced divers alike,
Sail Rock dive site is fairly isolated located. Not just for us, but for ocean creatures too. And an isolated site makes a good pit-stop for all the travelling pelagics that make their way through the Gulf of Thailand like whale sharks, sailfish, schools of jacks, barracuda and batfish. The rock is riddled with holes and cracks that make perfect hiding spots for moray eels, shrimps and crabs, and the rocks and boulders around the base of the site are almost guaranteed to be hiding a few blue-spotted rays.
What makes Sail Rock dive site so special?
Sail Rock has a feature that sets it apart from all others in this area of the world – the vertical chimney. If you hug the rock on your descent and keep your eyes open around 6 metres depth, you’ll see the entry to the Chimney. It’s a 3 metre wide hole that descends right into the rock. Drop into the Chimney at 6 metres and follow it down towards the exit all the way down at 18 metres. Makes for stunning visuals for all you Instagrammers out there!
Does Big Blue Diving do trips to Sail Rock?
You’re darn right we do. We go out at least once a week for a 3-dive full day trip. You’ll get to enjoy two dives at Sail Rock and a third dive at Samran Pinnacle. Not dived as often, Samran Pinnacle is regarded as a fisherman’s site and unsurprising because of the volume of fish life around the site. There are actually three pinnacles that make up Samran dive site and each one has heaps of marine life and likely only other divers from your boat. It’s a great dive site to cap off a full day trip to Sail Rock!
