How long can you hold your breath? On the SSI Level 1 Freediving course we’re going to see if we can get you to hold it for upto 3 minutes. Imagine holding your breath for three minutes! Now imagine doing it as you dive to depths of 40 meters or more!???
This is routine for JP, our Chilean Freediving Instructor at Big Blue Freediving, who pushes his mind and body to extremes as he holds his breath for minutes at a time while descending far below the surface. It is an intense, isolating pursuit, but draws an inbuilt addiction within him that makes him want to go longer & deeper every time he descends! Not a practice I reckon his mum can be very happy about!

During the last few decades a few adventurous people have started to dive into the ocean in reach of maximum depths, re-starting this ancient practice with the sole purpose of figuring out how deep they could go. This is how modern Freediving was born, and over the last few years it has increased so much in popularity that it is now regarded as the fastest growing water sport in the world.
The SSI Level 1 Freediving course is an introductory course with no previous experience required which we offer here at Big Blue Freediving. You will learn the appropriate skills and knowledge to dive safely to depths up to 20 metres. The course includes theory sessions about freediving breathing techniques for before and after diving, a dry breath hold, relaxation, physiology and safety procedures. A pool session will include dynamic apnea (horizontal UW swimming) and depth where you will progressively learn about technique including adequate finning, body positioning and being more streamlined. The following day you go out on the boat and practice pull down and duck dive descents, equalising techniques and see how far you can go before being issued your freediving certification.
