Swim for Sharks 2023

“Swim for Sharks” is an annual charity event dedicated to the conservation of sharks and marine life. This initiative is a collaboration between Big Blue Diving and Shark Guardian, a marine conservation charity. Traditionally held in August since its inception in 2008, this year we’re relying on better weather in September.

As the name implies, swimming is at the heart of Swim for Sharks. This event has successfully raised substantial funds for various ocean-related causes.  The main attraction is a challenging 3.4 kilometer competitive swim around Koh Nang Yuan Island. For those who prefer a more leisurely pace or are less competitive, there’s also a snorkel race option. Participants are encouraged to secure sponsorships for their swim, with all contributions directed toward Shark Guardian to support marine conservation, education, and research efforts.

The local community on the island gets enthusiastically involved in Swim for Sharks training, with fierce competition for the top spot on the winners’ podium. However, it’s all in good spirits, and the event offers more than just swimming to generate funds for vital shark and marine conservation initiatives.

Additional highlights of the event include:

Kids Swim for Sharks: A miniature swimming event for children held a day before the adult race, in collaboration with the local SSI Swim School, led by skilled UK-trained swimming instructors.
Auctions and Raffles: Generous donations from various islandwide businesses, ranging from villa stays and diving equipment to free drinks and diving excursions, contribute significantly to the annual fundraising total.
Shave for Sharks: Initially a lighthearted idea born over drinks, this head-shaving event has become a crowd-pleasing tradition at Swim for Sharks, often resulting in creative and questionable hairstyles parading the streets in the days that follow.

Even if you’re not participating in the swim, the evening promises entertainment and enjoyment. Big Blue usually hosts a lively beachfront bar party on the night of the adult swim race, making it a must-attend event in August.
