What’s the best divemaster course in the world all about?
The divemaster course is your first step into the world of professional scuba diving. It is designed to turn recreational divers into professional divers through a combination of classroom lectures, some self-study, and of course lots of time in the water exploring the Koh Tao diving sites with real students as well as certified divers.
To begin your divemaster (DMT) course you must have at least 40 logged dives, but if you’re a few short, not to worry! Go ahead and sign up anyway because as soon as you’re registered in the divemaster with Big Blue Diving you can start diving for free to log some practice dives before the real thing starts.
The course duration is entirely up to you and your work ethic, but bear in mind you’ll get from the course what you put into it. We’ll give you every opportunity to learn – you just have to take it. The more thorough your diving education, the more confident a divemaster you will become. So during your DMT, we recommend you take enough time to shadow the Big Blue Divemaster Crew as much as you can, assist our Big Blue Instructors on as many courses as possible, and thoroughly learn about the dive industry by immersing yourself in daily operations of our dive centre.
What’s involved?
Our team of Instructor Mentors will guide you through the program, which consists of 3 sections: theory, water skills development, and practical assessments with student divers.
The theoretical portion of the divemaster program involves attending lectures on Physiology, Equipment Techniques, Decompression Theory, Physics, and the Environment. You’ll also complete study guides and sit two exams to test your knowledge of the underwater world.
As a DMT at Big Blue Pro, we will develop your water skills through fitness tests such as swims and tows. You’ll also take part in skill circuits to refine your demonstration abilities and quality as well as workshops where you can apply your new knowledge to real-life situations and scenarios. A major part of the divemaster course is to be able to lead customers on dives while ensuring their comfort, safety, and enjoyment, so it is important that we train you efficiently on the practical applications of your training to the real-life world of professional scuba diving.
The practical assessment portion of the divemaster course involves assisting instructors on courses with student divers in training. The minimum is two Open Water Diver Course assists, two Advanced Adventurer Course assists, and one Rescue Diver Course assist. Through these assists, DMT’s are able to develop their teaching and leadership skills as well as their problem-solving abilities, and that will set you up for real-life work as a divemaster. The Divemaster program is fun, but can sometimes be demanding. Just bear in mind that when it feels like a lot of work, it is all worth it in the end when you earn your SSI Divemaster rating and gain the opportunity to travel and work in beautiful destinations all around the world. Plus, all DMTs are rewarded upon completion with their very own Big Blue Dive Master Challenge … we won’t go into too much detail, but we can guarantee it will be a night to remember!
How long does it take?
Typically the divemaster course takes two to six weeks to complete. The duration of your course is dictated by how much previous diving experience you have, your travel plans, and of course the time it takes you to complete the course requirements. Shorter and longer courses are an option but to get the most out of your training you should plan to stay for longer if possible. After all, chances are you’ll get hooked and sign up for your instructor training course with us straight afterwards!

Are there any prerequisites?
- Be at least 18yrs old
- Be certified to at least SSI Diver Stress and Rescue level, or equivalent
- Have a minimum of 40 logged open water dives
- Have a current medical exam for scuba diving signed by a licensed medical practitioner
- Have current training in First Aid, CPR, and O2 provision
- Be a trained Rescue Diver
