It’s always going to be controversial listing the top 10 dive sites on Koh Tao, in order, but someone’s got to bite the bullet, take one for the team, and give a knowledgeable Koh Tao divers opinion about the dive sites around Koh Tao. So here we go the top 10 dives sites on Koh Tao starting at Number 1….
1. Chumphon Pinnacle
Maximum Depth: 40 meters
It’s close between this and Sail Rock, but to start us off on a controversial choice I’ll go with Chumphon Pinnacle, probably because I’ve had my best dives ever here! Heaps of whalesharks, bullsharks, marlin, massive schools of all types, Chumphon is an awesome divesite. Located to the northwest of the island, it features towering granite pinnacles teeming with diverse marine life. Divers often encounter schools of barracuda, giant groupers, and occasionally whale sharks cruising by.
2. Sail Rock
Maximum Depth: 40 meters
Often regarded as the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand, it’s hard to argue, but for me I’ve dived Sail Rock quite a lot where the visibility on one side of the Rock can be pretty limited, but it really shouldn’t be used as an argument to downgrade it because Sail Rock is an incredibly wicked dive site! Situated about halfway between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, it boasts an impressive vertical chimney that descends to great depths. The site is famous for its abundance of marine species, including colorful corals, large schools of fish, and occasional sightings of whale sharks and bull sharks.
3. Red Rock Drop Off
Maximum Depth: 20 meters
I love this site for its diversity. You descend down a pinnacle, looking at the rays in the cracks, then head west to a reasonable sized cave then up to a shallow reef dive around Nang Yuan and into Japanese Gardens. Red Rock Drop Off offers a dramatic underwater landscape with vibrant coral formations and intricate swim-throughs. Divers can spot a variety of marine life, including moray eels, rays, and groupers patrolling the area.
4. Southwest Pinnacle
Maximum Depth: 30 meters
Often compared with Chumphon it really shouldn’t be as it is considerably smaller and does tend to harbor different schools of fish here that you don’t really get so much of at Chumphon, like the massive schools of fusiliers and yellow tailed barracuda. Southwest Pinnacle features a series of underwater rock formations adorned with colorful corals and sea fans. This site is known for its resident schools of snappers, batfish, and occasional sightings of stingrays and whale sharks.
5. Green Rock
Maximum Depth: 25 meters
This is a great site if you like nooks and crannies and a few little over head environments. There’s also a sizeable Trigger pit off it as well which is a fascinating watch if you’ve got the experience. Green Rock is famous for its maze-like underwater topography, which includes tunnels, caves, and swim-throughs. Divers can explore the intricate formations while encountering a diverse array of marine life, such as blue-spotted stingrays, nudibranchs, and octopuses hiding among the rocks.
6. Sattakut Wreck
Maximum Depth: 30 meters
The Sattakut Wreck is an artificial reef created by intentionally sinking a decommissioned naval vessel in 2011 right next to the rather lonely divesite of Hin Pee Wee, a single standing Pinnacle. This site is home to a plethora of marine creatures, including schools of fusiliers, snappers, and barracuda. Divers can explore the wreck’s structure and observe how marine life has colonized it over the last decade.
7. White Rock
Maximum Depth: 20 meters
Probably Koh Tao’s biggest dive site. You could easily spend 3 dives over the whole area, focused around a white pinnacle that rises to about 5 meters below the surface. White Rock is a popular dive site known for its vibrant coral gardens and abundant marine life. Divers can encounter colorful reef fish, sea turtles, and occasional sightings of blacktip reef sharks patrolling the area.
8. Laem Thien Caves
Maximum Depth: 18 meters
The best dive site on the east coast of Koh Tao. Laem Thien Caves offer a unique diving experience with a series of underwater caverns and swim-throughs. Divers can explore the intricate rock formations while spotting marine life such as nudibranchs, shrimps, and juvenile fish hiding within the caves.
9. Shark Island
Maximum Depth: 25 meters
Despite its name, Shark Island is not primarily known for shark sightings but rather for its stunning coral reefs and diverse marine ecosystem. Divers can explore the underwater landscapes while encountering colorful reef fish, sea fans, and occasional sightings of reef sharks.
10. Twins
Maximum Depth: 18 meters
Twins is a fantastic dive site for beginners and experienced divers alike. It features two underwater pinnacles surrounded by coral gardens teeming with marine life. Divers can spot schools of tropical fish, as well as moray eels and reef octopuses hiding among the corals.
