Living overseas is a fun and enlightening thing to do, but during a time like COVID, living overseas can feel a bit isolating and lonely. Nothing quite clears your head like a trip to an island paradise, some relaxed days and nights on the beach, and maybe even some SCUBA diving! So if you’re stuck in a Thai city, maybe working from home, and looking for a place to escape to for the weekend, where should you go? Where should you holiday in Thailand in 2020?
The answer is simple – you should be spending your holiday time relaxing on Koh Tao. Here are our top reasons to holiday on Koh Tao in 2020.
Things are open.
Chatting with our customers in our beachfront restaurant at night, we’ve come to realize something – Koh Tao is quite open compared to the rest of Thailand. The island is still taking precautions as a community, such as masks and temperature taking, but generally, restrictions on the island have been lifted. Restaurants, bars and shops began to open again last month which means that you can enjoy a vacation that actually feels like a vacation. You won’t be stuck in your resort or villa. A walk down Sairee Beach at night and you’ll find beach lounges open and serving cocktails, restaurants serving delicious meals and snacks, and nightly fire shows to entertain everyone. And if you feel like going out late and maybe doing some dancing, the clubs on the island are open too. If you’re thinking of taking a bit of a holiday in Thailand in 2020, you won’t be bored on Koh Tao, that’s for sure.
Accommodation prices have been reduced.
Not all of the hotels and resorts on the island have reopened but those that have are generally offering reduced prices right now. Generally, you can either afford to stay on the island longer than usual, or you can afford to put yourself up in some pretty nice places. Villas with pools and ocean-views have never been cheaper! Get out of the city, stay in a luxurious villa overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, and watch the sunsets behind Nang Yuan island. Now is your time to do it for some of the lowest prices you’ll find on Koh Tao.
Over 20 beaches on the island, but very few tourists.
Have you ever wanted to spend a day alone on a deserted beach pretending you’re Robinson Crusoe? Well, right now you can almost do that here on Koh Tao. With over 20 beaches dotted around the shoreline of Koh Tao, you can get a more genuine beach vacation now than any other time. If you’re willing to do a bit of hiking, you can get over to some beaches where you can set up for the day on a big blanket under a tree, or a hammock in the breeze, and enjoy paradise without (almost) any other people. Bring a Bluetooth speaker, some food and water, some good friends, and spend the day enjoying the sounds of the ocean washing up on the sand. Bring a mask and a snorkel with you and you can even head out into the water and try to see some black-tipped reef sharks! They’re juveniles, are used to snorkelers, and can be seen almost anywhere around the island.
Combine your holiday in Thailand with some SCUBA diving.
Koh Tao has many exciting activities to keep you busy if that’s what you’re looking for. But it is known especially for one sport – SCUBA diving. Have you ever thought of trying it? A lot of people think that you have to do the full Open Water Diver course in order to even try out diving. It’s a big commitment if you’re not even sure if you’ll be comfortable breathing underwater. But there are other options that cost less, take less time, but give you the chance to give SCUBA diving a shot to see if it’s something you’d like.
Did you know you can do a one-day Basic Diver experience? This is the most basic SCUBA diving activity we offer here at Big Blue Diving Koh Tao. You’ll meet your instructor in the mid-morning and go over some quick gear setup and the fundamentals of keeping yourself safe during a dive. In the afternoon, you’ll get to head out on one of our boats to do one or two dives at some of the gorgeous dive sites around Koh Tao.
Want to learn a bit more about diving but still don’t know if the full Open Water Diver course is for you? We also have a SCUBA Diver Course that is a two-day certification that will allow you to dive down to 12 metres under the supervision of a dive professional. It’s a great alternative to the Open Water Diver course especially if you’re running short on time.
Do you happen to have children over the age of 10 that would be interested in SCUBA diving too? They can do any of these courses with you! In cases where there’s an earned certification, the 10-year-old will be awarded the Junior version of the certification. Have a child between 8 and 10 years old that’s feeling left out? We’ve got a course for them too. Bubblemaker will get them breathing underwater and might start a new lifelong passion for them!
