Marine life at Hin Ngam...
Situated off Koh Tao’s southern coastline near Shark Island, Hin Ngam is a unique dive site that combines natural reef formations with one of the island’s most significant artificial reef and coral restoration projects. The site consists of granite boulders, coral-covered outcrops, and a variety of man-made reef structures designed to encourage coral growth and create new habitats for marine life. Depths range from around 5 meters on the shallow reef to approximately 18–22 meters on the deeper sections, offering a diverse underwater environment that continues to evolve year after year.
Currents & Conditions
Hin Ngam is generally accessible throughout much of the year, although conditions vary depending on seasonal weather patterns. Currents are usually light to moderate but can occasionally become stronger due to the site’s more exposed southern location. Visibility commonly ranges from 10–25 meters, while water temperatures remain a comfortable 27–30°C year-round. Good water movement helps support both the natural reef and the thriving coral restoration efforts that have become a defining feature of the site.
Underwater Landscape & Marine Life
The name Hin Ngam translates roughly to “Beautiful Rock,” and the site offers an impressive mix of natural and artificial reef environments. Large granite boulders covered in hard corals blend seamlessly with numerous man-made reef structures that have been strategically placed to regenerate damaged reef areas and provide shelter for marine life. These artificial habitats include reef modules and coral nurseries that have become heavily colonised by corals, sponges, and reef fish over time.
The result is a fascinating underwater landscape where conservation and diving come together. Schools of fusiliers, snapper, and bannerfish move between the reef structures, while butterflyfish, angelfish, and parrotfish feed amongst the growing coral colonies. Juvenile fish often use the artificial reefs as nursery grounds, while larger groupers and sweetlips patrol the surrounding area. Moray eels, lionfish, and blue-spotted stingrays are regular sightings, and keen-eyed divers can find nudibranchs, pipefish, cleaner shrimp, and other macro life hidden amongst the restoration structures.
The site provides a unique opportunity to witness reef regeneration in action, making it not only a beautiful dive but also an inspiring example of marine conservation efforts around Koh Tao.
Skill Level & Certification
Suitable for Open Water divers in calm conditions, though the site is particularly appreciated by certified divers with good buoyancy control due to the extensive coral growth and restoration work throughout the area. Advanced Open Water divers can enjoy longer profiles around the deeper sections and spend more time exploring the various artificial reef installations. Maintaining excellent buoyancy is encouraged to help protect both established corals and newly developing restoration projects.
Access & Logistics
Hin Ngam is commonly visited as part of our southern dive schedule and is often paired with nearby sites such as Shark Island, Aow Leuk Point, or White Rock. The site is reached by boat in approximately 15–20 minutes from the main pier, depending on conditions. Combining healthy natural reef, innovative artificial reef structures, and abundant marine life, Hin Ngam offers one of Koh Tao’s most interesting and environmentally significant diving experiences.
