Marine life at Three Rocks...
Coming into Koh Tao from the ferry you can’t help but notice Three Rocks as you enter Maehaad Bay. Set just off shore from the beautiful Jansom Bay on the west coast of Koh Tao, sits 3 rocks all just meters apart from each other in depths typically down to 8-10 meters at the bottom. Its an easy dive site with a big arch through the middle rock. The rocks are surrounded by nothing but sand so spend your time looking on and in the nooks and crannies.
Currents & Conditions
Maehaad Reef is generally calm and well protected, though gets pretty wild and undiveable from June to August & November & December. Currents are usually light, making it ideal for training dives and refreshers. Visibility commonly ranges from 8–20 meters depending on season and plankton levels, and water temperatures remain a comfortable 27–30°C year-round. Its proximity to shore makes it one of the most convenient and reliable dive sites around the island.
Underwater Landscape & Marine Life
The site is quite literally 3 large granite rocks that rise from about 10meters below the surface to about 7 meters above. THe middle Rock has a large swimthru / arch which is pretty much the best feature of this dive site but you would be surprised what little treats we encounter here like the blue ringed octopus, spanish dancers, black tip reef sharks and loads of needle fish below the surface. Schools of parrot fish and little yellow tail barracuda frequently gather around the rocks, while angelfish, butterflyfish, and wrasse move steadily across the coral. Blue-spotted stingrays are often found resting on sandy sections, and moray eels hide within rocky crevices. The site is also a favourite for night dives, when crabs, shrimp, and hunting predators emerge, transforming the familiar rocks into something entirely different after dark. Three Rocks delivers relaxed, fish-filled diving with the added bonus of being just minutes from shore.
Skill Level & Certification
Perfect for beginners, Discover Scuba experiences, Open Water training, and refreshers thanks to its shallow profile and calm conditions. Certified divers enjoy it as an easy fun dive or night dive, with plenty of time to slow down and search for smaller reef life. Good buoyancy control is encouraged to protect the healthy coral patches.
Access & Logistics
Three Rocks is only 10 minutes away. We meet at 12:15pm and depart directly from Sairee Beach via our shuttle boats to our main dive boat. The site is often paired with nearby west coast locations for a varied two-dive trip, with return to shore around 17:00pm — easy access, relaxed diving, and only 10 minutes away.
