Marine life at Sairee Reef...
Running parallel to the main beach of Sairee Beach on the west coast of Koh Tao, Sairee Reef is a long, gently sloping reef that offers easy, accessible diving right on our doorstep. Depths typically in the shallows and descend gradually to approximately 12 meters. The extended reef line is very much for beginners & macro hunters.
Currents & Conditions
Sairee Reef is generally calm and well protected, except during the monsoon that hits us between June & August. Currents are nest to nothing, making it ideal for training dives and refreshers. Visibility commonly ranges from 8–20 meters depending on season and plankton levels, and water temperatures remain a comfortable 27–30°C year-round. Its proximity to shore makes it one of the most convenient and reliable dive sites around the island, but really only dived during the months of November & December as the heavy monsoon kicks in.
Underwater Landscape & Marine Life
The reef is made up of scattered coral bommies, sandy patches, and stretches of fringing hard coral growth. While it may not have the dramatic topography of offshore pinnacles, Sairee Reef surprises divers with its fish density and macro life. Schools of fusiliers and juvenile snapper frequently gather along the reef edge, while parrotfish, butterflyfish, and wrasse move steadily across the coral. Blue-spotted stingrays are often found resting on sandy sections, and moray eels hide within rocky crevices. We do get eagle rays and turtles on Sairee as well but they’re pretty rare. The site is also a favourite for night dives, when crabs, shrimp, and hunting predators emerge, transforming the familiar reef into something entirely different after dark. Sairee Reef delivers relaxed, fish-filled diving with the added bonus of being just minutes from shore.
Skill Level & Certification
Perfect for beginners, Discover Scuba experiences, Open Water training, and refreshers thanks to its shallow profile and calm conditions. Certified divers enjoy it as an easy fun dive or night dive, with plenty of time to slow down and search for smaller reef life. Good buoyancy control is encouraged to protect the healthy coral patches.
Access & Logistics
Sairee Reef is one of our most convenient dive options. We meet at 12:20pm and depart directly from Sairee Beach via our shuttle boats to our main dive boat — or in some cases conduct training dives directly in the bay. Travel time is minimal, maximising time underwater. The site is often paired with nearby west coast locations for a varied two-dive trip, with return to shore around 17:00pm — easy access, relaxed diving, and right on our doorstep.
